When you’re buying a gun scope, choosing the biggest and most expensive isn’t always going to guarantee you a great product. It’s true that you get the quality that you’re willing to pay for so choosing the cheapest is probably not going to be the best option. But going right for the most expensive is overlooking some very important things like what’s right for you not just what’s right in general.
Think about where you typically hunt. Do you stay in when the weather is foul and it’s raining or stormy? Or do you go out no matter what? If you typically go out in all types of weather and your scope and gun can be exposed to rain, you want to very carefully read the scope’s specs. Some scopes are designed specifically to be water resistant while others aren’t. If you go out in the rain you want to make sure that you’re buying a gun scope with a water repellent lens. Otherwise, water can get into the scope and ruin it from the inside out making it useless very quickly.
Reading the fine print can help you see if the scope you’re looking at is water resistant. It’s a good idea to read the fine print even if you don’t particularly need a water repellent lens. Fine print will help you see certain things like guarantees and exceptions to the quality and performance of the scope that they may not point out in big letters. The fine print is typically where you’ll find the warranty also. Make sure the warranty lasts at least 30 to 60 days so you’re protected against a defective lens.
When you’re buying a gun scope you need to make sure that the lens you look through is clear enough to be comfortable for you. The bigger the scope lens in front, the lighter and clearer your view through it will be. If you hunt when it’s dark outside, you want that forward lens to be as big as possible and give you a lighter view. Any type of low light conditions can be improved with scope like that.
There is a trade-off for having a large forward lens, however. That means the lens will have to be mounted farther away from your eye and farther up on the gun. You might need to play around when you’re buying a gun scope to find where on the gun you’re most comfortable with the scope and settle for a lens of that size. The best scope in the world isn’t going to do you much good if it’s unnatural feeling to you because it’s so far away.
When you’re buying a gun scope you’ll also want to make sure that it has an anti-reflective coating on the lens. You don’t want an animal to see any type of reflection off of your lens and bolt away. Don’t forget that when you’re buying a gun scope, it’s a significant investment so take the time to get the exact scope you need.

A tree hunt is something that most deer hunters look forward to. Many happy hours can be spent looking at stands and deciding which one to purchase. The tree stand is a great place to hunt from because it conceals your location even more than if you were on the ground in camouflage. It minimizes the chance of the deer catching your scent, seeing you or hearing you.
Planning a tree hunt takes a little bit of time in the beginning. You have to prepare the tree with your stand and steps to make it safer. First of all, you have to consider how you’re going to get your weapon into the stand. Install a step with a pulley so that you can haul the weapon up to the stand before you climb.
Something you do not want to do is to climb your tree while holding the weapon. Even if your stand is a high and you’re very agile, that’s asking for an accident to happen. Holding your gun as you climb is simply reckless behavior. You need to make plans to get your weapon into the stand without having to do that and putting yourself in a position where you could accidentally fire the gun while climbing.
You also want to keep an eye on the weather. You don’t want to be in a tree stand if the weather drops incredibly cold or if a storm comes in. You are more exposed to the cold air and elements while in a tree stand than while on the ground. And if a fast storm whips up while you’re in a tree stand, especially if there is very much wind, it can be very dangerous.
Where you’ll put your tree hunt stand is important as well. You want to put it in an area where it doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb on the side of the tree. But it also needs to be in a place where nothing is going to be hanging between you and your line of sight. You want to choose an area where there’s cover but not so much cover that it interferes. This is where an experienced deer hunter can help you. Get advice from someone you know who regularly uses a tree hunt stand about where to put it on how to set it up and it will make the whole process much easier for you.
Choosing an area with lots of cover doesn’t just help you camouflage yourself but it means they’re more likely is deer that will frequent the area. Look for deer tracks when you’re deciding where put your tree hunt stand and that will help. You may also want to look around for tracks and find a few spots to put tree stands out. If you only have one tree hunt stand prepared and the wind happens to be blowing from behind you, it’s going to be hard to get a deer with your scent blowing toward them. Having more than one stand set up will help prevent that.

Grouse hunting is popular sport for hunters who like the challenge of hunting birds. Grouse hunting often gets grouped in with partridge and quail hunting because there are ranches and land with fairly enclosed areas that offer grouse hunting tours and guided hunts.
Grouse hunting is a sport that many people consider a bit more exciting than hunting things like partridges and quail because of the different type of flight a grouse has. And unlike duck hunting where a hunter lies in wait with decoys and a call to attract ducks, grouse hunting is done with a line of hunters pushing forward and others with them trying to flush out the grouse. Many people like to think of this type of hunting as a sort of skeet shoot hunting. You walk and wait for the birds to be flushed out. As they fly up, you take aim and shoot.
The line of hunters will have people on each end called flaggers to help flush the birds out. This is a safety concern you need to be aware of–that unarmed people are on each end of the line. It’s important that when the grouse take flight you not turn completely to the side going after these birds because of the safety concern. Go after the birds that are in your direct line of sight in front of you and just slightly to each side but never turn at a sharp angle going after shot.
You want to make sure you have the proper clothing before you go grouse hunting. Because you may be walking through very wet and marshy areas, depending on where you go, you’ll want to have properly waterproofed boots. Boots that also have some sort of insulation inside them can also help keep your feet stay warm. You want to dress for the weather which is often on the cool side by wearing insulated clothing and dressing in layers so that you can take layers off or put them on depending on how you feel. You don’t want to be out on the grouse hunt and realize that you’re burning up because you overdressed. If you dress in layers you can simply remove a layer to become comfortable again. Or if you find that you’re too cold you can put a layer on.
Probably the most important grouse hunting tip is to simply avoid swinging your gun. Because grouse are hunted in that line, you are responsible for the safety of the person on each side of you. Here’s where it can pay to be sober while you’re hunting. While there is nothing wrong with drinking, having even a drink or two before you wield a weapon is a bad idea. You could get excited by the rush of grouse flying up into the air and swing into the line going after one, putting your fellow hunters at risk. Grouse hunting is a sport best done completely sober and with concentration on the task at hand.

Hunters who enjoy hunting big game get excited when elk season approaches. One way that you can help yourself if you’re aiming for a trophy elk or any elk at all is by practicing a great deal long before the season starts. Too many hunters leave the guns and bows and arrows in cabinets when hunting season is out. What they need to be doing is setting up targets and practicing.
Not only is it important practice with the weight of the arrows that you’ll be using when you hunt, it is important to practice hitting the target. Do you think you have a better chance of getting a trophy elk if you’ve been practicing for a few months or if the first time you shoot at an elk is the first time you’ve shot in a few months?
Just like an athlete or any type of sportsmen, hunters should train and that includes target practice. It makes you more familiar with your weapon and how to use it in different weather. And that will help you when elk season starts. Vary your practice schedule, as well. Practice shooting at targets from a variety of positions and angles so that you’re better prepared for the actual hunt. Try crouching or shooting from a low position just as you might in a natural elk hunt.
Stake your claim on land as early as possible. You should go out and scout the area that you’ll be hunting in if at all possible to look for elk. Make sure that you know who owns the land you’re on and if it’s privately owned that you have permission from the landowner. Walk the land carefully before elk season starts. Become familiar with it and scout out areas where elk may be once you’re ready to hunt.
Don’t wait for elk season to inspect all of your equipment and make sure everything is in working order. If you discover something as soon as the season starts you could end up waiting too long while it’s being fixed and miss part of the season.
And scent is an important step that some hunters don’t think is necessary. Just because some hunters somewhere managed to get a trophy elk or deer without worrying about his scent doesn’t mean that it will work for you. Do everything you can to minimize your scent in the area. Always be aware of which direction the wind’s blowing in so that you won’t get downwind from any animals. You can buy a little spray bottle designed just for this or simply wet day fingertip and gauge the direction of the wind.
Elk actually have very heightened sense of smell, more than many other game, so do everything you can to minimize your natural scents like soap smells and smells from shampoo. Use unscented products as well as unscented laundry detergent. And make sure that your clothing isn’t exposed to anything with a strong scent like a campfire. Also consider purchasing a product designed to hide your scent from the animals.
