December 2nd, 2011 — Bears, Hunting
Bear hunts are a popular sport in Alaska. It’s one of the many types of big game hunting that’s popular in this very northern state. People who don’t live in the area and aren’t familiar with bears may wonder why anyone would want to hunt a bear. But it’s actually a sanctioned activity to help keep the population down. There are several states in the United States where hunting certain types of animals is not only legal but encouraged to help thin the population on a regular basis.
Aside from the official reason for bear hunts, people enjoy doing it because of the excitement. Unlike hunting an animal like a deer that’s very meek and non-threatening, hunting bears has a certain amount of risk inherent in it. If you encounter a deer in the wild it will run from you. Many people don’t realize that bears will often go in the opposite direction too, but at times when they feel threatened by you they will attack.
That slight risk of being charged by the anima you’re hunting is enough to keep many people going on bear hunts. The potential excitement if something like that should happen and knowing that you’re hunting an animal that’s a predator itself gives many people a bit of a rush. Even someone simply baiting bears could be in the wrong place at the wrong time and encounter a hungry bear, putting himself at risk. It’s largely unlikely that you’ll face a bear in this particular way but it’s something that you can’t completely brush aside if you plan to bear hunt. Having one see you and come at you will be a frightening and exciting thing.
It’s also one of the reasons that someone inexperienced with bear hunts should never go alone and never go with anyone who’s not much more experience than they are. The inherent dangers might seem slight to someone hunting because they have a weapon, after all. Having a gun that can bring down a bear certainly can protect you. But there are other factors at play when you’re faced with an animal that large behaving in an aggressive manner. Will you have time to raise the weapon? Is the weapon loaded and ready to fire? And when faced with a charging bear, will you have your wits about you enough to raise the weapon and fire properly, hitting the animal in a way to stop it?
People do get injured on bear hunts. It’s not a terribly common thing but it does happen from time to time. To avoid that being you, try a guided hunt or find a very experienced bear hunter to teach you the basics and take you your first few times.
Also, be sure of the laws in your local area and how they regard bear-baiting. It’s illegal in some states where there is bear hunting and in others there are regulations about what kind of food you can use and how you can put it out.

December 1st, 2011 — Hunting, Hunting Trips
Guided hunts are a unique way to become familiar with hunting whether you plan on hunting deer, quail or big-game. Various outfitters offer guided hunts and many people take advantage of those each year. There is an impression in the hunting community that guided hunts are somehow less real or less skillful. Some people who’ve been hunting for years and never needed a guided hunt even think of them as a type of cheating. But nothing is further from the truth. Guided hunts are simply a way to help a beginner get started or to give an old pro at new way of looking at things.
Guided hunts might sound like they’re very rigid and strict, but that’s not the case at all. On the guided hunts, the guide is someone who’s very knowledgeable about whatever game you’re hunting as well as the area you’re hunting in. Sometimes guided hunts are done at hunting lodges where there is a vast reserve of land for everyone to hunt on. That means that the guide is familiar with the area and there’s much less risk of an accident or anything happening. That’s an ideal situation for someone new to hunting who is really not familiar with the outdoors or the forest landscape.
The biggest advantage of guided hunts is that you have a qualified and experienced leader. That person can help you navigate the landscape and explain things about the game you’re hunting to help you understand how to find the game, how to track it, and how to take it down.
Guided hunts are especially nice for people who are hunting big game that can pose a danger. Things like black bear hunting, elk hunting, coyote hunting, mountain lion hunting and other types of large-cat or bear hunting can be dangerous. When you’re hunting a hunter, you are the predator that’s tracking the animal that is usually the one tracking its prey. These animals, when cornered, can become dangerous and charge you. But if you learn about these things on guided hunts, you’ll be much more confident when you go to hunt on your own or with friends. And you’ll have the knowledge that might save your life.
Guided hunts have guides who are very familiar with the area. In fact, many of the guides often live right in the area where they’re guiding you. You’ll be able to camp right in the area where the animals are and where they’re expected to be seen. You can learn how to bait certain animals when it’s allowed in your state or your area and how to call certain animals because an experienced guide will demonstrate all these things for you.
Rather than thinking of it as “fake” hunting, think of it more as a sort of mentoring when it comes to hunting. Many professions and hobbies have apprentices who learn from more experienced people and guided hunts are like that with less experienced hunters learning from the experts. You get out of it what you put into it, so choose your hunt carefully and pay close attention to your guide.

November 30th, 2011 — Hunting, Rules Laws and Regulations
The hunting laws in your area are necessary reading before you go on a hunt. While some people think it’s fun or a bit of a joke to hunt and fish without licenses or permits and basically do what they want, hunting laws should be taken seriously. They’re very often put in place for the safety and protection of hunters as well as other people. That shouldn’t be taken lightly. They should be respected to make sure that you stay as safe as possible and pedestrians stay safe, and to make hunting season enjoyable and worry free for everyone.
There also may be hunting laws put in place to protect the animals from being over-hunted or abused. By and large, hunters respect the animals that they’re hunting. They’re an important food source for many families and they provide a lot of enjoyment for the hunter who enjoys the chase. Respecting the animals as well as people means following hunting laws.
One of the most important hunting laws to follow is not hunting out of season. If you hunt deer when deer season is already gone, you’re considered a poacher. Poachers aren’t very well-respected in the hunting community because they’re refusing to follow the same rules that govern everyone else. It can prove dangerous because people aren’t expecting to find anyone shooting at animals and may not be prepared. Many people who are going to be out during various hunting seasons will dress in reflective bright colors to avoid being mistaken for an animal. Poachers are putting them at risk by being out and shooting during the off-season. A poacher can also be fined and imprisoned for hunting off-season. Always be aware of the hunting laws and the dates in your area.
Also, be aware that each area can make its own laws and while some may not make sense to you, they still have to be followed. There are various laws that affect shotgun and rifle hunting and separate laws often that affect bow hunting. As an example of laws that are put in place to protect both people and animals, there’s a law in many areas about the smallest amount of draw a bow can have when used for hunting. In Texas for example, a compound bow used for hunting must have at least a 40 pound draw unless the hunter is using it to hunt squirrel.
Why does it matter if the bow has that minimum draw? Because the bow with less draw weight behind it is less likely to be able to kill an animal. It’s more likely to simply wound and animal and then animal may die of those wounds later after its bolted to where the hunter can’t find it. It can cause unnecessary suffering. And in some cases, a wounded animal that’s in pain may actually turn on the hunter. Animals are wild and unpredictable so using a compound bow that’s probably not going to be able to deliver a killing shot is simply irresponsible.

November 28th, 2011 — Deer, Hunting
Buck hunting is one of the most popular types of hunting in the United States. If you decide to go buck hunting, you’ll be joining thousands of other hunters who enjoy the challenge and excitement of tracking and hunting deer. You want to make sure you have the proper equipment and gear, especially if you go alone. It should be stressed however, that if you’re in doubt about your ability to successfully buck hunt on your own, you should not go by yourself. Take a friend who’s experienced or go on a guided hunt until you’re familiar with the basics. Being unsure of your situation and going buck hunting can put you at risk as well as other people in the area.
The first step is deciding whether you’re going to hunt with a gun or compound bow. There may be laws in your area that forbid one or the other. Most areas, however, have two seasons for buck hunting. There’s a season for gun hunters and a season for those who use a bow. So you can actually choose both if you prefer, just be sure you only hunt with the type of weapon that’s in season at the time.
You also want to make sure you have the right ammunition or the right arrows. Choosing the right arrows for buck hunting is an important consideration because you want the arrow to be heavy enough to travel well and be able to kill with one shot. You’ll also want to make sure you have the proper hunting knives. When you get a buck you have to field dress it, which means you remove the internal organs and lower the weight of the animal to allow you to drag it from the woods. You’ll want to carry at least one knife to use for this. You won’t need a skinning knife while you’re in the woods, but rather a thick and sturdy one to allow you to cut into the animal and dress it. Know your local laws regarding hunting because they may have specific procedures you must follow when doing this.
The proper clothing is necessary for buck hunting. Your clothing needs to be camouflaged so that the deer won’t pick you out among the brush and trees. You’ll also want to consider the weather and choose appropriate clothing. Waterproof boots to keep your feet warm are essential. If you’re going to hunt in a tree stand as opposed to on the ground, you want to have extra warmth available and be very aware of the weather so that you’re not caught out in a bad storm.
Of course, you’ll need the proper hunting license and any gun or bow permit that you need in your area. A product designed to cover your scent can help. And you want to use tree stand or some sort of chair, if you’re staying on the ground, but sturdy and comfortable. Also, consider taking a bit of food and water as well as a small first aid kit with you when you go buck hunting just in case of an unforeseen accident.
