Should You Consider Guided Hunts?

Guided hunts are a unique way to become familiar with hunting whether you plan on hunting deer, quail or big-game. Various outfitters offer guided hunts and many people take advantage of those each year. There is an impression in the hunting community that guided hunts are somehow less real or less skillful. Some people who’ve been hunting for years and never needed a guided hunt even think of them as a type of cheating. But nothing is further from the truth. Guided hunts are simply a way to help a beginner get started or to give an old pro at new way of looking at things.

Guided hunts might sound like they’re very rigid and strict, but that’s not the case at all. On the guided hunts, the guide is someone who’s very knowledgeable about whatever game you’re hunting as well as the area you’re hunting in. Sometimes guided hunts are done at hunting lodges where there is a vast reserve of land for everyone to hunt on. That means that the guide is familiar with the area and there’s much less risk of an accident or anything happening. That’s an ideal situation for someone new to hunting who is really not familiar with the outdoors or the forest landscape.

The biggest advantage of guided hunts is that you have a qualified and experienced leader. That person can help you navigate the landscape and explain things about the game you’re hunting to help you understand how to find the game, how to track it, and how to take it down.

Guided hunts are especially nice for people who are hunting big game that can pose a danger. Things like black bear hunting, elk hunting, coyote hunting, mountain lion hunting and other types of large-cat or bear hunting can be dangerous. When you’re hunting a hunter, you are the predator that’s tracking the animal that is usually the one tracking its prey. These animals, when cornered, can become dangerous and charge you. But if you learn about these things on guided hunts, you’ll be much more confident when you go to hunt on your own or with friends. And you’ll have the knowledge that might save your life.

Guided hunts have guides who are very familiar with the area. In fact, many of the guides often live right in the area where they’re guiding you. You’ll be able to camp right in the area where the animals are and where they’re expected to be seen. You can learn how to bait certain animals when it’s allowed in your state or your area and how to call certain animals because an experienced guide will demonstrate all these things for you.

Rather than thinking of it as “fake” hunting, think of it more as a sort of mentoring when it comes to hunting. Many professions and hobbies have apprentices who learn from more experienced people and guided hunts are like that with less experienced hunters learning from the experts. You get out of it what you put into it, so choose your hunt carefully and pay close attention to your guide.

Duck Hunting Gear

duckhuntingThroughout the world there are different duck populations and different water bird populations, and just as these will vary, so will your luck as a duck hunter. Duck hunting gear is constantly improving, however, making it simpler and straighter forward for you to go hunting and come back successful. The improvements in duck hunting gear are easily encompassing all areas of duck hunting that are going to concern you, including but not limited to clothing, blinds, ammunition, methods for dog training, decoys and all other hunting gear that you may require.

Many hunters are of the believe that modern duck hunting ammunition and shells are far advanced in comparison to the lead shot that was used several years ago. There are many serious improvements that have been made, including for example higher velocity loads which are capable of providing greater distance for shooting as well as a non toxic shot, which means that consuming the bird will be more palatable in the end. With these improvements in equipment, hunters are capable of bagging their prey from even further away than before

Camouflage wear for hunting has also certainly improved the success of duck hunting. The garments that are worn today are extremely lightweight and also happen to be waterproof, and so they allow for great comfort and they also allow the hunter to remain dry for a longer period of time. Duck hunting jackets have been tailored to be wind proof, and this keeps the hunter warmer for longer, and they are also lightweight meaning that freedom of movement is capable of being provided.

Duck boats are also now much more advanced in nature. Today’s duck boats are much more specialized today than they were a few years ago. Duck boats are a necessary part of the duck hunting gear that is necessary for navigating streams, rivers, swamps, sloughs and lakes for prey. The manufacturers making these watercraft are responding to the importance of boats among hunters of water fowl like ducks.

Another improvement has been made in the way of duck blinds both on land and in boats as well as they have undergone a variety of design changes. Now they offer superior construction, greater designs and better materials as well. When it comes to having all of the right gear, these brand new duck blinds tend to be portable, easy to install, compact, light weight, affordable and also quite capable of hiding hunters. Boat blinds are made from rugged nylon and the frames are study, easy to set up, easy to attach and also just as easy to take down as well. The same is true for land blinds, which are just as easy to set up, and attach and take down, for easy hunting and great results.

There are plenty of new innovations in duck hunting that are making the sport more enjoyable and more successful than ever.

Coyote Hunter

For a coyote hunter to be successful, he needs to learn a few techniques that are pretty common in coyote hunting. The time spent learning these techniques is well worth it. The coyote hunter thinks of himself as a bit differently than other hunters, and rightfully so. Coyotes are known as clever and sly. These are animals that are aware of their environment in a very intense way. Unlike a deer that simply tries to avoid predators and freezes for a moment when threatened, a coyote is a predator and used to hunting prey. So the coyote hunter has to outsmart the predator which can give a hunter a challenge and a feeling of satisfaction, as well as respect for the animal.

Coyote calling is one of the techniques that ever coyote hunter should take the time to learn. Coyotes are one of the most vocal animals on the planet. So learning the technique of coyote calling can make the difference between a successful or unsuccessful hunt. Just like other animals, coyotes have different calls for different situations. Males and females sound different and the calls have a different pitch and cadence to them when they’re used for different things. A certain type of call is used to alert others in the pack of danger, one call is a mating call and another call may be one male challenging the others in the pack or looking for another coyote. Sometimes the call can even vary from year to year.

While some calls are meant to mimic things like mating calls and location calls, distress calls are probably the most effective. This call isn’t a natural coyote call at all. It’s the sound of coyote’s prey might make as it’s frightened or dying. That attracts other coyotes who come looking for share of the meal. Depending on what the coyotes are hunting at the time, you’ll need to adjust that to match the sounds.

Another technique coyote hunters should learn is called baiting. Coyotes aren’t picky when it comes to food. And their willingness to eat almost anything can give a coyote hunter a definite advantage. Baiting is simply putting food out for the coyote to attract them. The bait which is usually some type of meat is placed in a relatively open area so that the coyote hunter can watch it and see if any coyotes come. It’s one way to determine there are even coyotes in the area worth waiting for.

Camouflage and unscented clothes are a necessity for the coyote hunter. You must remember that the coyote is a predator and it understands how to hunt. That makes coyote hunting one of the most challenging types of hunting. Just as the coyote understands how to catch up with the rabbit and corner it, it will understand when it’s being watched and cornered. That’s why learning different calls and proper baiting are so important. Using these techniques properly can make you a much more successful coyote hunter and not someone who’s disappointed on a trip.

Mountain Lion Hunting

Mountain lion hunting is one of the most exciting hunting sports imaginable. All hunting is exciting, but when you’re hunting the hunter it gives you an extra rush of adrenaline and the knowledge that you’re truly into the natural rhythm of the wild. Hunting a big game cat-like a mountain lion takes skill and caution. Mountain lions are dangerous predators, and one could easily turn around and hunt you, instead.

Most likely, though, a mountain lion would simply run away if it discovered you because they’re not big on confrontation. If you corner one, it’ll attack. But if it has an out it will take it. They prefer to avoid humans at all costs and are adept at hiding. In fact, you may have walked right by one in the wild that knew it was hidden and safe, and never even known it.

Understanding the habitat and the habits of these animals can help you when you’re mountain lion hunting. It’s important to understand that these are creatures that will protect their territory fiercely. And their territory is typically an area of about 300 square miles. Figure about a third of that for the female mountain lions. They’re not really nocturnal and do their moving during the daytime. They’re already very large cats with the males at about 150 pounds and measuring up to 8 feet long. But despite their size, which would allow them to rush and overpower their prey, they choose a strategic and slow approach.

Mountain lion hunting is exciting because mountain lions are such good hunters. They’re slow and quiet, stalking their prey and then springing when the prey least expects it. They tend to gather around areas where deer like to herd. They eat mostly deer, but also kill smaller prey. Mountain lions like areas with brush and cover that can hide them until it’s too late for the deer or other animal. As the animal turns away from them, the mountain lion rushes out and take it down with their sharp claws and powerful jaws.

Mountain lions aren’t just hunted by man. They’re sometimes killed by bears, and occasionally they get into a tussle with hungry wolves. This usually happens when they’re fighting over prey, not because the bear or wolves want to eat them. Mountain lion hunting starts with good tracking. These cats have distinctive tracks, with four toes, the front two of which aren’t right next to each other. It’s quite distinctive from some other cats’ prints.

You’ve probably heard of a duck call, but you may not be aware there’s a mountain lion hunting call, too.  This will only really benefit you if many mountain lions happen to be in the area, which is unlikely.

For safety’s sake, take a dog mountain lion hunting. It’s not as if you’re hunting deer that will simply run away. If a mountain lion really feels cornered or threatened it may turn and attack. If that happens, stare at it or until you can get your weapon ready. Your confidence along with the attacking dogs may be enough to save you.

Pellet Gun Hunting Guide

Pellet GunAre you thinking about going out hunting with a pellet gun? There are a few important guidelines that you are going to need to follow if you want to make sure that you are being both humane and effective out there. Some of the things that you need to consider include choosing the proper gun, the proper scope and the proper ammo, and you must also make sure to use the correct practices when you go pellet gun hunting. The first consideration that you are going to want to make is what type of game you should be hunting and should not be hunting. Here is a quick guide to pellet gun hunting using an air gun.

First and foremost, you should understand that you should only be seeking out small game when you are going pellet gun hunting. Even the more powerful air guns are not capable of imparting enough destructive force that clean kills can be guaranteed when you are hunting larger prey. You should be sticking to creatures like field mice, rats and squirrels, and should never try to kill anything larger than an average sized raccoon when you go hunting using a pellet gun. Having the proper caliber of gun and ammunition is vitally important when it comes to hunting with a pellet gun.

In general, when it comes to hunting small game using a pellet gun the most preferable type of guns and ammo is a .22 caliber. A common misconception among hunters is that smaller calibers such as .20 and .177 produce a higher pellet velocity and as a result are better for hunting, but this is not necessarily true. The internal damage force is more important than the penetration force, meaning that you want ammo that is going to disperse more force after the impact than before, meaning that a heavier and thicker gauge like the .22 caliber is the right way to go when it comes to pellet gun hunting for small game. The smaller calibers are capable of risking passing through the animal without actually causing enough damage to kill it, which is inhumane.

If your game is going to be up in a tree or further out than 15 yards away, then using a scope is a smart idea for your pellet gun. Most pellet rifles come with scope mounts that you can fit a wide variety of different scopes onto. Once you know what the tendencies are for your particular gun, you can find a scope that will help you hit the game exactly where you intend for the pellet to strike.

Pellet gun hunting is capable of being really fun and enjoyable, and it is a great way for younger shooters to learn how to hunt successfully. As long as you are careful about the considerations mentioned above, you can find this method of hunting to be truly rewarding in many different ways.

All About Quail Hunting

quailHunting quail and pheasants has been a truly favorable sport for a great many years now. The entire scenario surrounding quail and pheasant hunting has really changed throughout the United States over many years. Because of infrastructural development, the face of hunting for quail and pheasants has definitely changed. But what has changed is that now hunters do not have to go out chasing after their prey. Instead, they can take advantage of recreational hunting in order to enjoy the sport without all of the work involved.

Game lovers that enjoy a good hunt are constantly turning to quail and pheasant hunting because it means that there are plenty of prospects and they can easily catch a few birds before the day is through. Although catching larger animals often offers much greater rewards, many people turn to the hunting of quail and pheasants because they can shoot and kill a dozen birds and have plenty of game to bring home afterward. Quail and pheasants may be smaller, but claiming to have hunted 12 quail just sounds better than bringing home a single deer.

Both quail and pheasants have claimed many states as their homes and habitats, meaning that many states in the nation offer good hunting for these game birds. People that are interested in hunting quail and pheasants can search online or contact local regulators for hunting licenses to find out what areas offer quail and pheasants. These birds prefer vegetated fields where there is long grass for them to hide and nest in. They prefer areas where there is plenty of undergrowth so that they have adequate coverage, but this does not mean that they cannot be found and enjoyed in the wild. Before the sun comes up, quail and pheasants tend to fly out from the grass in order to find pieces of material that they can add to their nests and this happens to be the prime time for hunting them since they are out in the open and rather vulnerable.

The normal shooting time for quail and pheasants begins at around 9 o’clock in the morning, which is when the birds begin to become busy in terms of feeding activity. The male birds of the species tend to be more colorful in comparison to the females. The females tend to be smaller in general and their features tend to be lighter and plainer.

Hunting for quail and pheasants is a popular sport but it is important to make sure that we do not wipe the entire population out by overhunting quail and pheasants. We want to make sure that we leave enough behind that they can procreate so that generations in the future can hunt for sport and for food as well. Protecting quail and pheasants is a part of hunting responsibility.

Hunting Outdoors

There is no shortage of specialized equipment that is available to hunters when it comes to hunting their chosen prey throughout the year. There are a number of different variables that determine what equipment a hunter is going to require including the animal that is being hunted, the setting where the hunter will be hunting the particular animal in question, the size of animal that the hunter expects to catch, any potential government regulations, and so forth. Before doing anything in terms of hunting, it is wise for you to check out the laws and regulations in your area.

There are several types of hunting, and each has its own “tools of the trade,” as it were:

* Baiting – Attracting animals through the use of decoys, bait, lures or other similar things. Decoys and lures can sometimes be hand made, and can be quite the collectors items.

* Blind or stand hunting - This form of hunting involves waiting from a hidden, sometimes elevated, position for the prey to wander by. The blind setup can be quite intricate, mounting to a tree and incorporating cover to mask the location of the hunters. Others can be as simple as a camouflaged tarp

* Calling - similar to baiting, but instead of a physical attractant, the animal is drawn to the hunter via a animal call. The animal call is a device that replicates the sound, even in the frequencies beyond human hearing. Some handmade calls are quite valuable and collectible.

* Camouflage – this is the technique where the hunter will combine clothing, terrain, and even scent to mask their locations. Different animals will respond to different forms of camouflage, so identifying what you will need is going to take a bit of research.

* Dogs – Animals are much better hunters than humans tend to be, given their need of hunting for survival in the wild. Employing the use of dogs for tracking and chasing game is very common because dogs can lead you not only to potential prey, but also to an animal that has been shot down if you cannot immediately tell where it has ended up. Dogs are especially proficient as retrieving fallen fowl.

* Driving – the technique of pushing the herd towards a certain direction, where a trap or other hunter may lie in wait. This task is easily performed by using special gun rounds that emit noises as opposed to firing ammo for penetration.

* Flushing – This is the act of forcing animals out from their hiding spots, and getting them to flee and expose themselves as a result. There are many tools for this type of flushing, some which are more effective than others. Some of these flushing tools will act to impersonate a predator in order to force the prey into flight.

* Netting – In this method, the primary mechanism for hunting is the use of nets to incapacitate the prey. The nets may be a passive part of a trap, or part of a net launching system.

* Persistence Hunting – Here, the hunter will use a variety of techniques to force the animal into exhaustion. A lot of the methods employed will involve tools that are meant to scare the animal into flight. This style of hunting requires much more endurance on your part, but is often quite rewarding in the end because the hunt ends on your terms.

* Scouting – This part of hunting involves studying and searching for an area that is truly prime for the act of hunting. Highly trained or well equipped hunters will be able to identify locations of high animal traffic.

* Stalking or still hunting – Here the hunter will use cat-like, silent movement to better prepare for the strike, or during tracking. This type of hunting is ideal for animals that spook easily and that can easily outrun you. Stalking or still hunting are excellent tactics for sneaking up on the prey so that you can get at a better vantage point without being seen or heard.

* Trapping – The hunter will employ the use of traps, be it snares, cages or what have it. Some traps are designed to catch animals unharmed. Most traps are designed for smaller animals, but there are also traps that are designed for larger prey.

After catching the prey, what comes into question is the intent of the hunter. Trophy hunters will take a part of the animal to use as a trophy; where as those hunting for food will prep and dress the animal before transport, and then do what is necessary for preparing the animal to become palatable.

Hunting is an exciting sport that gets more and more popular year after year. Hunting is something that can be self taught, or handed down from generation to generation. Fathers take their sons hunting. Entire families go hunting. For some people, it is a rite of passage to learn to handle a gun in the wild. The first step to learning to hunt is getting a good working knowledge of laws, regulations, hunting seasons and other vital information with which to operate.
