Birdshot can be described as a type of metal shot that was designed to be packed into shotgun shells. Birdshot consists of a number of metal spheres that are milled so that they are all the same size, and so that they can be easily packed together into a shotgun shell. When that shotgun shell is fired, it splits open and the birdshot is designed to separate and fly out at whatever target the gun is shooting at. The classic form of birdshot is made out of lead metal, but there are other materials that are used to create birdshot including steel birdshot, tungsten birdshot and other similar materials since there are environmental concerns that have to do with lead.
This style of shooting is named primarily because it was designed to be used with hunting a number of different types of game birds. When you are dealing with a larger type of shot, what you have is buckshot in reference to the idea of shooting larger game such as deer and pigs. The shot is packed up into a cartridge that is backed with padding as well as gunpowder and then it is loaded up into a weapon and fired at whatever the intended target is.
There are a number of different sizes of birdshot and they are customized in order to deal with game in a variety of different sizes. The primary goal for the hunter is going to be to be able to fire from a distance that is reasonable while still achieving enough of a level of penetration with the shot that the animal is killed or at least stopped or slowed down. If shot that is much too large is used, it can cause a severe amount of damage to the animal which is going to make the game completely useless for the table or for the trophy room. Shot that is too small on the other hand is capable of inflicting injuries without being effective enough for the animal to actually be killed. In addition to this being completely inefficient for hunting, small shot is also capable of being inhumane because the animal may be allowed to suffer considerably without actually dying if it becomes injured by birdshot that is too small.
Although the purpose behind birdshot is to take down birds, it is certainly also going to be capable of injuring larger animals as well. Many hunting supply stores do carry birdshot as well as shotgun pellets that come pre-packed with birdshot that is already ready for you to use. As with any form of ammunition, it is vitally important for you to completely understand what the appropriate uses are for birdshot before you use is so that you are safe.
