Plan a Safe Archery Hunt

An archery hunt makes a hunter feel like part of the natural world. Archery is an ancient practice and hunting with a bow and arrow can make man feel more connected with his natural environment. Whether someone is an experienced archer or about to go on their first archery hunt, probably the most important consideration is safety. Archery hunting is far safer than hunting with ammunition. But that doesn’t mean accidents can happen. Be aware of yourself and your surrounding environment to keep your archery hunt safe at all times.

One of the most important safety considerations is that your bow is in good shape. A compound bow that is fired improperly such as being pulled back and released without an arrow, will sustain damage over time. The pulleys can loosen from having to absorb the shock repeatedly. If the compound bow wasn’t stored properly, it can be warped or have other problems that can cause it to release an arrow improperly and send it in the direction you don’t expect. When hunting season is out, you should store your compound bow in a temperature controlled area and treat with care.

In fact, if you love to archery hunt then there’s no reason your bow should be stored for a long period of time at all. The best way to get a trophy kill during hunting season is to practice when hunting season is out. Regular target practice is one of the best ways to improve your hunting. It will also keep your bow from suffering from neglect and the problems it causes. If you haven’t used your bow in some time, you may want to go ahead and change the string just as a precaution. On the other hand, if you’ve been practicing heavily, putting a fresh string on before hunting season may also be a good idea.

Accidents can happen when you’re not even using your compound bow. Just carrying the arrows and accidentally falling can be disastrous. That’s why you need a quiver that holds them firmly and shields the tips. It needs to be a sealed quiver that completely covers those tips to avoid accidental pokes. You’ll also want to make sure the quiver has cushioning in the bottom or you put cushioning in to keep the arrows from rubbing together and chipping or wearing down the tips.

In archery hunting there are few mistakes where the hunter actually thinks they’re aiming at an animal but it’s another person. Because 20 to 25 yards is about the average distance between you and the animal, that doesn’t leave much room for mistaking people as the game. But that doesn’t mean it can’t happen. You can’t assume that everyone takes the precautions you do as far as making themselves known to other hunters. Never loose the arrow unless you’re absolutely sure of what you’re shooting at.

Also, a first aid kit, extra water and a compass to help you in case you get turned around in the woods are good safety precautions whether you’re on an archery hunt or you have ammunition.

Your First Moose Hunt

Your first moose hunt is bound to be exciting. This is true whether you’re experienced in hunting things like deer and elk or if you’ve never been hunting before. If you’re used to hunting things like deer, then hunting a moose is very similar except the sheer size of the animals is so impressive. Some deer can be quite large but they can’t compare to the size of a fully grown moose. The sense of moving up to that size game can feel like a step up after you’ve been hunting smaller animals. If you’ve never been hunting before, then you’re starting out with a really big game animal by choosing to moose hunt.

Moose have very good senses of hearing and smell. They’re smart animals and not easy to get. And just their size alone makes them very intimidating especially for new hunters. Being close enough to shoot one of them also means you’re close enough for it to charge at you. Fortunately, this is rare and not something to worry too much about. Just be aware that it’s a possibility.

A moose hunt can be very challenging because the animal is so large and smart. The best time to hunt this animal and when they are typically in season is during their rutting season. All animals are distracted during the rut. They’re so focused on their own scent-marking and the scent of the opposite sex that they just don’t have the mental resources available to be as alert for hunters as they normally are.

A moose hunt typically takes place early in the morning or late in the evening because that’s when the animals are most active. And during the rut, the males are so focused on challenging other males and finding suitable females that it’s much easier to get a shot. In fact, a bull moose might know that you’re there but be so focused on a scent that they disregard you for a short period of time.

A guided moose hunt is a good idea for your first hunt especially if you’re an inexperienced hunter in general. You also need to be prepared with the correct ammunition that can bring something as large as moose down, as well as a tarp and a sharp hunting knife so that you can field dress any moose that you get. It’s virtually impossible to drag an intact moose out of the woods so you need to remove the innards in the wild to make it possible.

You also can’t decide that it’s too much trouble and leave the carcass there. You must eat what you kill and you can even be fined or arrested in some areas for not doing so. It’s also a sign of respect of the animal to use as much of it as possible. Be prepared for these things before you go on a moose hunt and you’ll end up having a much better time. Even if you don’t choose a guided hunt, take someone experienced with you who can help you find the moose as well as properly field dress it.

Guide to Gun Cleaning

cleaningThe first step to good gun cleaning is to scrub out the bore of your gun using the correct Phosphor bronze brush size, and use a bore solvent like Bor-Solv Supreme for the greatest possible results. This will remove all powder fouling and residue from the bore of your gun if you use it vigorously. Occasionally you may want to use a bristle brush so that the bore can retain more solvent for a longer period of time, making it an improvement. This method is more commonly used in Europe than in North America.

After scrubbing out the gun using a Herringbone 4″ x 2″ patch in a split brass or a nylon jag, removing any of the contaminated solvent. The split jag is used by inserting a patch midway, rotating it in your hand in whatever direction you are going to tighten, twisting the rod in use. You always want to make sure to check the chamber when cleaning. Is there powder residue around the forcing cone? If so, then it may be advantageous to use a chamber brush handle with a chamber brush in order to remove the build up of this residue.

Next you should oil the gun boars using a clean wool mop and some Rangoon oil. Rangoon oil is a tenacious oil that evaporates slowly and therefore allows the gun bore to be stored away for a longer period of time without requiring as much maintenance. Occasionally you should make a point to wash the wool mop out with warm soapy water. If the mop is exceptionally dirty, it might be better to use some paraffin or turps first hand. When the mop is dry you should re soak it in clean Rangoon oil, keeping it in a polythene sleeve or a similar container to keep it fresh and in good shape.

When you store your gun, you should avoid forgetting to relieve the tension of the main springs. This can be done by inserting a suitable pair of snap caps before dry firing the gun. After you install a muzzle stuffer, it will keep the oil vapor inside of the barrel, and it will also keep dirt out and will keep the end of the barrel from getting damaged inside your gun cabinet or another similar storage device.

Before you fire the gun again it is vital that you remove any and all remaining traces of oil. Any oil that remains in the barrel could harm the barrel walls when you fire it for the first time. Use a patch and jag to remove any remaining oil, and check the chamber thoroughly before you fire to make sure that there is no powder residue around the forcing cone in the chamber before you fire the gun.
