There are thousands and thousands of hunting sites online. Someone who enjoys hunting and surfing the Internet could spend weeks just discovering new sites and evaluating them. Because so many new sites go up each day, it would be a never ending pursuit.
But because there are so many, that means that the majority of the hunting sites probably aren’t going to provide you with any new information. It’s best to find one or two or even a handful of hunting sites that you go to regularly for information and conversation in the form of forums and message boards.
Most of the popular hunting magazines have websites, and some of them have this type of user interaction. At the very least, you’ll find quality information on the sites that publish excerpts from their print magazine. To judge whether or not a site like this will be useful, look at the type of articles that are available on the site and whether or not the entire articles are there or if they offer just a paragraph or two. A trend in online sites that relate to certain types of magazines is to show only part of the article to hook the reader into wanting to finish it in the magazine. Sites like this can prove frustrating if you’re reading an article that has you very interested and you can’t finish it without going and finding a copy of the hunting magazine and purchasing it.
Some hunting sites instead condense the articles in their print magazine and give you a stripped-down version. This is far superior to only having the first part.
But by far the best hunting sites are those that are complete hunting portals online. Not only do they have original articles about hunting but they do have an active forum where people interested in hunting can meet to talk about a variety of topics. Look at the message board or forum and see how many members are registered. Scan the dates of the most recent posts to see how active it is. If you find a hunting site with several forum members but the last post was a couple of weeks ago, you’re probably not going to get very much out of the interaction there.
Active boards will have several replies to posts in the last couple of days and many posts that were started in the last couple of days. You can find hunting sites like this with active boards that are covering hunting in general or very specific to a certain game animal. Duck hunting sites may be very different from sites that deal with deer or elk hunting. And of course predator hunting like bear, coyote and big cats may have their own sites as well.
One of the best types of hunting sites covers all of these but have separate conversation areas for each type of hunter. The site will have sections for each type of hunting with its own articles and its own experts frequenting the forums.

When you visit hunting forums there are some things you should keep in mind about how to behave and how to go about posting and answering questions. Many people go to forums and message boards and jump right in without looking at the rules of the board or knowing very much about the people or the way conversations flow. If you’ll spend just a little bit of time getting used to the place before you start posting, you’ll enjoy yourself more and you’re likely to get better answers to any questions that you have. If you don’t do these things, you could end up being the butt of some jokes and maybe even shunned on the board.
People who go to hunting forums fall into a few different categories. There are the people who are regulars and have hundreds or thousands of posts and whom everyone knows of and respects on the forum. Then there are those who’ve been there quite a while but don’t post as often or don’t post as much knowledgeable information as to the regulars. Then there are the newbies who’ve just come to the hunting forums and gotten started. These people usually only have a few posts and are getting used to the forum. Then there are those called lurkers.
Lurkers are people who join hunting forums or any other type of forum who typically read the messages on a regular basis but rarely if ever post. They simply lurk around the forums soaking up the information without bringing attention to themselves. To have the best experience at hunting forums, you’ll want to be a lurker before you become a poster.
Lurking sounds kind of like a behind the scenes almost creepy kind of behavior. But online at message boards and forums, lurking is a smart way to start out. Spend several days to a few weeks or even longer reading the posts that are already there and becoming familiar with the give-and-take on the hunting forums. Each specific forum has a special style. Some are very formal and don’t allow things like text shortening like you using text messages or instant messaging. Others are very relaxed and you can say pretty much whatever you want. Some don’t allow profanity, while some do.
To avoid a major faux pas, lurk a while and get used to what’s allowed and what’s not at the hunting forums you want to visit. Also, before you post for the first time be sure you’ve read the board’s rules and guidelines. Some want you to introduce yourself before you start posting in earnest while others are more informal about it and simply ask that you make an introductory post but you don’t have to.
Knowing the rules of the hunting forums before you post and lurking for a while to get familiar with the kind of speech and the topics that are discussed will keep you from looking foolish and let you really enjoy your time on the forum.

November 30th, 2011 — Duck, Hunting, Hunting Trips
Duck hunt trips aren’t for every hunter. Even hunters used to hunting other animals may find duck hunting a bit different and less desirable. Much depends on the hours you like to keep. Most people who duck hunt get up long before the sun and are on the road before many of us are awake.
If you’re new to duck hunting, do yourself and every other hunter in the area a favor and hunt only with a very experienced person. There are few things worse than a new hunter coming to an area for the first time and being generally disruptive without even realizing it. There are rules and etiquette to everything and that includes duck hunt trips. So go on a guided hunt or take an experienced friend with you to help you learn the ropes. That will prevent other duck hunters from being aggravated with you and will give you a much more pleasant experience.
The idea that anyone who’s ever hunted anything can just grab up a gun and go on duck hunt trip is a false idea. There are skills and knowledge that are required for successful duck hunt. Your experienced friend, mentor or guide can help you learn these things.
If you don’t personally know anyone who duck hunts on a regular basis, simply find one. The Internet has a wealth of information about everything you could want to know about including duck hunt trips. Try looking at different message boards and forums at duck hunting sites. Even if you don’t find someone to go on a trip with you can glean a lot of knowledge from people this way. Look at duck hunting magazines for information and check with local hunter associations in your area.
It’s far better to get a guide or a mentor in your local area because they’re familiar with how things are in that spot. Duck hunting it might generally be the same but in different areas that are different techniques that seem to work better. You might as well learn the techniques that are used in your local area instead of something used several states away.
Duck hunt trips are also not cheap. If you’re looking for an inexpensive hobby, then you may want to look for something else. You need a variety of equipment, not the least of which is a decent shotgun. You may already have that if you’re hunter. But you want to wear camouflage clothing and clothing that keeps you warm enough, and you may perhaps invest in a duck call. There’s also the matter of a duck boat or duck blind. Purchasing a boat for duck hunt trips is a considerable expense. Building a blind isn’t as expensive but it does take a little bit of time and knowledge about how to properly build one. This is one area where having a mentor or guide can really come in handy.
Many decoys are fairly expensive, too. Follow your guide’s advice about which decoys seem to work best on a local duck population.
