How to Duck Hunt

When you’re ready to learn how to duck hunt, the best thing you can do is find someone in your local area who has experience and take them with you. Perhaps a good friend of yours is a duck hunter and can help you learn the basics. If not, you may be able to find a guide through a local hunting association.

Some people learn how to duck hunt simply by reading about it and going out and doing it on their own. This is not the ideal situation because there are pointers and tricks you need to pick up from other people. But whether or not you go alone or with a guide, there are several things you should bear in mind.

As with any hunting, duck hunting requires you to be camouflaged. Choose clothing that will help you blend in with your blind or the surrounding area when you’re lying in wait for ducks. Because you’ll be up in the middle of the night and duck hunting is best when it’s cold, you want plenty of warm clothes that also camouflage you. Beware of exposed skin that can become far more chilled than you realize when you’re concentrating on attracting ducks. Make sure you have your head covered to preserve warmth and extra gloves in case a pair gets wet or damaged.

Waders are another important piece of duck hunt equipment. You can get these in a camouflage print or just go with standard green or brown which blends in well also. If you’re in a warm weather area, you can find lightweight waders to keep yourself from getting too hot. In many areas, being too cold is a concern, in which case you can find insulated waders.

No information on how to duck hunt would be complete without talking about decoys. First of all, it’s important to purchase to the right decoys. Different ducks are attracted to different decoys. This is where a guide or an experienced duck hunter in your area can really come in handy. They can tell you which types of decoys work best in your area and which type work best depending on the exact area you’ll be hunting, whether you’re in a marsh or on the open lake. Decoys can prove to be expensive so you want to purchase the right ones from the beginning and not waste your money on decoys that aren’t going to work for you.

If you’re unsure about which decoys to purchase and can’t seem to find information for your area, go online and look for used decoys. You may be able to find them in places like eBay or in local newspapers. That can help you keep your costs down while you’re trying to figure out which are the best. If the seller is local ask why they’re selling to make sure that they’re not selling the decoys because they purchased the wrong kind, too.

Also, don’t forget that you’ll want to learn how to duck hunt by using a duck call. Learn to mimic the sounds that local ducks make rather than just blowing it as loud as possible. Softer sounds and shorter sounds will attract more ducks and give you a better experience.

Preparing for Duck Hunt Trips

Duck hunt trips aren’t for every hunter. Even hunters used to hunting other animals may find duck hunting a bit different and less desirable. Much depends on the hours you like to keep. Most people who duck hunt get up long before the sun and are on the road before many of us are awake.

If you’re new to duck hunting, do yourself and every other hunter in the area a favor and hunt only with a very experienced person. There are few things worse than a new hunter coming to an area for the first time and being generally disruptive without even realizing it. There are rules and etiquette to everything and that includes duck hunt trips. So go on a guided hunt or take an experienced friend with you to help you learn the ropes. That will prevent other duck hunters from being aggravated with you and will give you a much more pleasant experience.

The idea that anyone who’s ever hunted anything can just grab up a gun and go on duck hunt trip is a false idea. There are skills and knowledge that are required for successful duck hunt. Your experienced friend, mentor or guide can help you learn these things.

If you don’t personally know anyone who duck hunts on a regular basis, simply find one. The Internet has a wealth of information about everything you could want to know about including duck hunt trips. Try looking at different message boards and forums at duck hunting sites. Even if you don’t find someone to go on a trip with you can glean a lot of knowledge from people this way. Look at duck hunting magazines for information and check with local hunter associations in your area.

It’s far better to get a guide or a mentor in your local area because they’re familiar with how things are in that spot. Duck hunting it might generally be the same but in different areas that are different techniques that seem to work better. You might as well learn the techniques that are used in your local area instead of something used several states away.

Duck hunt trips are also not cheap. If you’re looking for an inexpensive hobby, then you may want to look for something else. You need a variety of equipment, not the least of which is a decent shotgun. You may already have that if you’re hunter. But you want to wear camouflage clothing and clothing that keeps you warm enough, and you may perhaps invest in a duck call. There’s also the matter of a duck boat or duck blind. Purchasing a boat for duck hunt trips is a considerable expense. Building a blind isn’t as expensive but it does take a little bit of time and knowledge about how to properly build one. This is one area where having a mentor or guide can really come in handy.

Many decoys are fairly expensive, too. Follow your guide’s advice about which decoys seem to work best on a local duck population.

Whitetail Deer Hunting Tips

Whitetail deer hunting tips are available everywhere from hunting DVDs to websites to television programs. The best tips that you can find, however, are tips from local hunters. Because every area is slightly different, the people who hunt in your local area are familiar with the way the deer move and react in that region. So find an old deer hunter who’s been at it for years and learn what you can. This is one of the reasons so many people enjoy things like deer camp or deer hunting lodges. You can learn a great deal from listening to people’s hunting stories over the years.

General whitetail deer hunting tips include things like actually using scent properly during the rutting season. The general wisdom is that when you go deer hunting you want to mask your own natural scent. Many people do this by using unscented soaps and shampoos, as well as unscented laundry detergent and fabric softener. They avoid smoking or getting near campfire smoke and try to stay as scent-neutral as possible. They may also use products to mask the human scent.

During the rutting season, there are some commercial scents available designed to attract deer. Some of these work very well while others seem to do very little. You might experiment with the scents to see how they work by placing the scent around the area where you are. Some whitetail deer hunting tips say never to use such a product, but you really need to experiment for yourself.

Calling deer is also another tactic that’s often used that can backfire during the rutting season. This is one of those things that you simply gain through experience. It’s not necessary to ever use a call, but if you do be aware that during the rutting season there are certain times when calling may do more harm than good.

Another one of the top whitetail deer hunting tips is to consider your footwear carefully. Whether it’s during the rut or at any other time, be sure you wear boots that you only wear during deer hunting. If you wear boots throughout the day and then wear them on the hunt, you’re carrying a ton of scent with you. The deer is going to smell you.

It’s best to wear boots that hold very little scent, even if they’re boots you only wear for deer hunting. Rubber boots don’t hold scent but can be very cold. Look for lined boots to keep your feet warm and dry if you’re in a cold weather area. You’ll also want to consider the clothes you wear and avoid blue jeans. It’s alright to wear bright orange so that other hunters can see that you’re not a deer, but a deer will spot blue before almost anything else.

And before you set your stand up, be aware of what direction the wind is blowing in. This is one of the most important white-tailed deer hunting tips for people who use tree stands. You might want to set several stands up so you have one available regardless of the wind direction.

Going Hunting for Mourning Doves

mdoveDove hunting is actually a really exciting sport. You can gather together a couple of hunters in a single field that happens to be an active ground for feeding and you are likely to have a really eventful hunt with lots of good results. In some states, you should recognize that it is illegal for you to go hunting for mourning doves and so it is important for you to find out what the local laws are before you go out shooting at any animals.

There are a number of counties and states that actually only allow for hunting of mourning doves or other varieties doves during specific hours of the day, such as during the afternoon hours for example. Planning a trip for hunting during such a time period is not difficult by any means but it does require some work and some planning.

The best way that you are going to be able to ensure that you have a successful hunt is to go to a popular source of food and water. Sometimes they are closely placed together and sometimes they are not. You should be watching fields in your local area in search of activity from doves. They tend to feed during the morning hours and then during the middle to the late afternoon is when they generally go to roost. You should be looking for flocks that are gathering on power lines over fields or in the fields themselves. Fields that have just recently been harvested also generally make for a good source for doves. Doves tend to flock to fields such as these if the hunting has been restricted in the area. In the days that are leading up to the hunt you are going to want to check to make sure that there is actually activity there.

Once a field that is busy has actually been identified, you are going to want to make contact with the owner of the land to make sure that you have permission to be there before you start hunting there. Once you have secured the necessary permissions, you should call other hunters who can get in on the action with you. A hunter may certainly hunt alone if he or she chooses, but the chance of shooting birds will increase when there are more hunters firing at them. A field with a number of hunters in it is going to scatter the birds, meaning that everyone is going to get a shot and a chance at nabbing a mourning dove.

In areas where hunting in the morning is permitted, the doves will begin to fly in just before the sunrise. Make sure that you are in position by this point and you should already be ready to shoot in order to get the best possible results.

Hog Hunts

If you’re considering going on hog hunts, you’re in for an exciting adventure. While this type of hunting is less well known in many areas where most people hunt for things like deer and ducks, hog hunts are becoming increasingly popular. Because hogs are small and fast, finding them and getting them is a real challenge. And it can even be exciting in a slightly dangerous way if you’re charged by a boar. This is not an uncommon occurrence and is something that you have to consider as part of the excitement of hog hunts. It’s necessary to be prepared and feel confident that you can react quickly to prevent injury.

There are many hog hunt outfitters out there that can help you get started. Probably if you look around your local area you’ll find several people who hog hunt, and there may even be associations for it. It’s one of the fastest growing sports in the nation. Many areas don’t have what’s known as a hog hunting season like they have deer season or duck season. So hog hunts can go on all throughout the year.

If you think hog hunts are something you’d like to enjoy, consider your personality. Even though it’s a very fast-paced and exciting sport when you spot a hog, it requires a lot of patience to get there. If you don’t have that patience that makes you able to wait until you get the right shot, you’re going to be frustrated a lot because you’re going to miss the mark. While some people can shoot a deer that’s running away and make a killing shot, a running hog is a very difficult target to hit. It’s necessary to be very patient for just the right moment when the hog is still.

It’s also a sport that you’ll be spending a lot of time doing in the evening. Hogs are very active usually just before the sun goes down so consider what you do during that time of day and whether or not you’re willing to rearrange it in order to go on hog hunts.

It’s also necessary for you to have the patience to make the right shot. That doesn’t just mean waiting to make it at the right time, but aiming at the right spot on the hog. Too many people aim for the head and end up seriously wounding the hog and causing it to suffer. You need to learn where to shoot the body of the hog to kill it quickly, preserve the meat and cause minimal suffering with a merciful kill. A guide or an experienced hog hunter can help you learn the kill zones, or the places to hit a hog that kill it quickly.

You also may end up walking a great distance tracking a hog that you’ve hit during hog hunts. Too many animals die after hog hunts because the hunter thinks they missed them and simply let them run away without following. That causes unnecessary suffering to the hogs and is an incredible waste. Be prepared to follow a great distance.

Guide to Hunting Guns pt 2

huntergun2… This article is a continuation from part 1.

Now what you are going to want to do is to go to the dealer that you have chosen and let them know that you are interested in transferring the purchase of a firearm from a website online. The dealer is going to charge you a nominal fee in order to assist you in the transaction.

Now you should print and fill out the Federal Firearms License transfer form, and you should make sure that it is faxed to the firearm shop by you or by the dealer that you are working with. Make sure that the transfer form is signed by the dealer before you send it out. Make sure that the order number as well as the license number for the dealer is both included before you send or fax the document in so that all of the paperwork is done properly the first time.

You should receive, in return, a tracking number for the firearm. This happens once the signed Federal Firearms License paperwork has arrived from the dealer that you are working with, and once the shop owner has filled out the proper FFL transfer form in response. Once all this has happened, the firearm will be shipped to your dealer. In the process, the necessary background check for the purchase of a firearm will be completed by the dealer that you are working with. After all of the paperwork has been filled out, filed and faxed properly, your dealer is going to let you know when you can come to pick up your ordered firearm.
