Packing to Hunt with the Family

familyhuntweekendWhen you are planning on going on a family hunting trip, there are a number of things that you simply should not be leaving home without. It does not matter what type of game you are going for, there are some things that you really just cannot leave home without. Keep the following list of things in mind when you are packing to hunt with your family.

Bring Granola Bars – Regardless of whether you like them or not, you are certainly going to be glad that you have them if you end up getting lost or hungry. They are definitely easy to keep, they last a long time, and they are packed with good stuff to keep you feeling healthy while you re out on a hunt. They come in a wide variety of flavors and there is nothing wrong with getting the chocolate variety if what’s what will make sure you bring them.

Bring Dehydrated Meals – Everyone seems to hate dehydrated meals, but only until they need them. You do not have to eat them if you do not want to, but you should absolutely bring them anyway. Pack enough to handle three weeks worth of days out there. They are light, small and super portable and they may actually mean the difference between life and death for your entire family. The meats and pasta dishes are generally the best ones to go for. Rice packs are also excellent, and they puff up to provide a lot of food for the tiny package.

Bring Mixed Nuts – Trail mix nuts are great and M&M candies also fall into this category. The candies are going to provide an excellent amount of glucose for keeping your body going, the nuts are going to contribute to the protein that you need, and the salt will also be helpful for obvious reasons as well. Trail mix mixes are not generally perishable meaning that they can be kept for a really long time to sustain you during your trips.

Bring a GPS – This is a must have in this day and age. You can get a GPS that will broadcast your position so that if you get lost, people will know where you are. Make sure that you keep one of these on you all the time in case an emergency happens and you need help.

Bring Extra Ammunition - You will never know when having extra ammunition is going to come in handy, so take the better safe than sorry approach and come prepared for everything.

Bring First Aid - Finally, make sure that you have a first aid kit containing the basic necessities and flares and other things. Make your own if you’re not satisfied with commercial options – Just make sure that you bring a first aid kit of some kind, especially when hunting with your family.

Navigating Hunting Sites

There are thousands and thousands of hunting sites online. Someone who enjoys hunting and surfing the Internet could spend weeks just discovering new sites and evaluating them. Because so many new sites go up each day, it would be a never ending pursuit.

But because there are so many, that means that the majority of the hunting sites probably aren’t going to provide you with any new information. It’s best to find one or two or even a handful of hunting sites that you go to regularly for information and conversation in the form of forums and message boards.

Most of the popular hunting magazines have websites, and some of them have this type of user interaction. At the very least, you’ll find quality information on the sites that publish excerpts from their print magazine. To judge whether or not a site like this will be useful, look at the type of articles that are available on the site and whether or not the entire articles are there or if they offer just a paragraph or two. A trend in online sites that relate to certain types of magazines is to show only part of the article to hook the reader into wanting to finish it in the magazine. Sites like this can prove frustrating if you’re reading an article that has you very interested and you can’t finish it without going and finding a copy of the hunting magazine and purchasing it.

Some hunting sites instead condense the articles in their print magazine and give you a stripped-down version. This is far superior to only having the first part.

But by far the best hunting sites are those that are complete hunting portals online. Not only do they have original articles about hunting but they do have an active forum where people interested in hunting can meet to talk about a variety of topics. Look at the message board or forum and see how many members are registered. Scan the dates of the most recent posts to see how active it is. If you find a hunting site with several forum members but the last post was a couple of weeks ago, you’re probably not going to get very much out of the interaction there.

Active boards will have several replies to posts in the last couple of days and many posts that were started in the last couple of days. You can find hunting sites like this with active boards that are covering hunting in general or very specific to a certain game animal. Duck hunting sites may be very different from sites that deal with deer or elk hunting. And of course predator hunting like bear, coyote and big cats may have their own sites as well.

One of the best types of hunting sites covers all of these but have separate conversation areas for each type of hunter. The site will have sections for each type of hunting with its own articles and its own experts frequenting the forums.

Boats for Hunting Ducks

Hunting ducks is typically either done in a blind or in the water or next to the bank, or in a boat. Boats for hunting ducks are set up differently than typical fishing boats or pleasure boats. These boats have a flat hull that gives them a very low profile against the water. This makes the boat and you much less noticeable to ducks and passing animals.

But when you’re hunting ducks, the type of boat you use does not determine how many ducks you get. What you do in the boat will make much more of a difference than the boat itself. First of all, you have to learn to be quiet and still. You’ve set your duck decoys and you’re ready and waiting for a shot. If you fidget very much, just the noise of your clothes brushing together may disturb nervous birds and keep them from coming near.

Don’t expect ducks to flock in as soon as you set your decoys. Once you’ve done that, you have to play a waiting game with them and simply be quiet and still is much possible to allow it to happen. If you plan on calling ducks, do it with restraint. Don’t try to out bellow the ducks thinking that the loudest call will attract them more. Try to sound like them with soft, short quacks and sounds. This will attract them much better than an unnatural sounding call.

Boats for hunting ducks do keep you very well camouflaged. Because you want to get flat in the boat, and the best time for hunting ducks is in the cold weather, be sure and bundle up. When you’re on cold water in a boat and lying in the belly of it, you can very quickly get far too cold. Flat bottomed John boats can also be used because of their flat profile and their width which makes them more stable in the water.

These type of boats let you go through high reeds and into places where traditionally shaped boats would scrape the ground. Many avid duck hunters build their own boats for hunting ducks or they do purchase a wide jon boat. Others use a traditional fishing boat to go to the blind where they lay in wait for the ducks rather than in the boat itself. Then they simply use the boat to retrieve the ducks.

Either way, you need to dress warmly and plan to be very patient. Just like the type of football or golf ball a sportsman uses won’t determine how successful he is at the sport, the type of boat or blind you choose will not determine how successful you are at duck hunting. The right kind of boats for hunting ducks can help you lay in wait in the center of the water near the decoys without being as noticeable to the ducks. But ultimately, your calling technique and your patience as well as the trueness of your aim will determine how many ducks you get more than the boat’s shape or size.

Your First Moose Hunt

Your first moose hunt is bound to be exciting. This is true whether you’re experienced in hunting things like deer and elk or if you’ve never been hunting before. If you’re used to hunting things like deer, then hunting a moose is very similar except the sheer size of the animals is so impressive. Some deer can be quite large but they can’t compare to the size of a fully grown moose. The sense of moving up to that size game can feel like a step up after you’ve been hunting smaller animals. If you’ve never been hunting before, then you’re starting out with a really big game animal by choosing to moose hunt.

Moose have very good senses of hearing and smell. They’re smart animals and not easy to get. And just their size alone makes them very intimidating especially for new hunters. Being close enough to shoot one of them also means you’re close enough for it to charge at you. Fortunately, this is rare and not something to worry too much about. Just be aware that it’s a possibility.

A moose hunt can be very challenging because the animal is so large and smart. The best time to hunt this animal and when they are typically in season is during their rutting season. All animals are distracted during the rut. They’re so focused on their own scent-marking and the scent of the opposite sex that they just don’t have the mental resources available to be as alert for hunters as they normally are.

A moose hunt typically takes place early in the morning or late in the evening because that’s when the animals are most active. And during the rut, the males are so focused on challenging other males and finding suitable females that it’s much easier to get a shot. In fact, a bull moose might know that you’re there but be so focused on a scent that they disregard you for a short period of time.

A guided moose hunt is a good idea for your first hunt especially if you’re an inexperienced hunter in general. You also need to be prepared with the correct ammunition that can bring something as large as moose down, as well as a tarp and a sharp hunting knife so that you can field dress any moose that you get. It’s virtually impossible to drag an intact moose out of the woods so you need to remove the innards in the wild to make it possible.

You also can’t decide that it’s too much trouble and leave the carcass there. You must eat what you kill and you can even be fined or arrested in some areas for not doing so. It’s also a sign of respect of the animal to use as much of it as possible. Be prepared for these things before you go on a moose hunt and you’ll end up having a much better time. Even if you don’t choose a guided hunt, take someone experienced with you who can help you find the moose as well as properly field dress it.

Hunting Decals

Hunting decals are one of the little perks of hunting that don’t really serve a purpose but can be a great deal of fun. We’ve all seen trucks going down the road that have more decals on them than paint. While you may not want to go to that extreme, displaying a few hunting decals that reflect your interest and enjoyment of the sport can be a fun way to start a conversation or just show people how enthusiastic you are for hunting.

In rural areas, hunting decals are common. From things like bumper stickers to removable window decals, most hunters display something on their vehicles. Hunting is very popular because it’s so inclusive. Both men and women can hunt, and age or physical ability is much less of a consideration than it is for sports like football or jogging. While most hunters need to be able to walk long distances and be on their feet for a while, that may be the only physical requirement. And that makes the sport of hunting one of the most popular in the country. It should be no surprise when, particularly in rural areas, you see a variety of different types of hunting decals displayed.

If you’re interested including one or two hunting decals on your vehicle, decide whether you want something permanent like a bumper sticker or a window decal. Some window decals aren’t removable and reusable somewhere else, and some are. The ones that aren’t removable won’t fall off or slide off the glass. They have to be scraped off like a bumper sticker.

If you’d like hunting decals that are a bit different from what everyone else in your area has, look online. There are so many different hunting stores as well as stores that sell decals and bumper stickers that will have a different assortment of hunting related decals. You’re sure to be able to find something unique. If everyone has a similar decal that’s sold locally, for instance, you can find one online that you’ve never seen in your area and that will draw people’s attention.

Hunting decals are also often used by groups of friends who hunt together. They may all have the same decal on their trucks to signify their kind of informal hunting group membership. You may also want to consider custom hunting decals. If you do have a group of people you hunt with regularly, you can order decals and bumper stickers that say what you want with your choice of logos. This is a great way to have decals that other people don’t have.

Don’t neglect to look on eBay for hunting decals that other people have made that are original, as well as discounted, popular decals. And don’t discount the possibility of someone approaching you in a parking lot after seeing the hunting decals on your vehicle. It’s often an icebreaker for people to discuss the sport they love with a complete stranger who could end up being a friend.

Pellet Gun Hunting Guide

Pellet GunAre you thinking about going out hunting with a pellet gun? There are a few important guidelines that you are going to need to follow if you want to make sure that you are being both humane and effective out there. Some of the things that you need to consider include choosing the proper gun, the proper scope and the proper ammo, and you must also make sure to use the correct practices when you go pellet gun hunting. The first consideration that you are going to want to make is what type of game you should be hunting and should not be hunting. Here is a quick guide to pellet gun hunting using an air gun.

First and foremost, you should understand that you should only be seeking out small game when you are going pellet gun hunting. Even the more powerful air guns are not capable of imparting enough destructive force that clean kills can be guaranteed when you are hunting larger prey. You should be sticking to creatures like field mice, rats and squirrels, and should never try to kill anything larger than an average sized raccoon when you go hunting using a pellet gun. Having the proper caliber of gun and ammunition is vitally important when it comes to hunting with a pellet gun.

In general, when it comes to hunting small game using a pellet gun the most preferable type of guns and ammo is a .22 caliber. A common misconception among hunters is that smaller calibers such as .20 and .177 produce a higher pellet velocity and as a result are better for hunting, but this is not necessarily true. The internal damage force is more important than the penetration force, meaning that you want ammo that is going to disperse more force after the impact than before, meaning that a heavier and thicker gauge like the .22 caliber is the right way to go when it comes to pellet gun hunting for small game. The smaller calibers are capable of risking passing through the animal without actually causing enough damage to kill it, which is inhumane.

If your game is going to be up in a tree or further out than 15 yards away, then using a scope is a smart idea for your pellet gun. Most pellet rifles come with scope mounts that you can fit a wide variety of different scopes onto. Once you know what the tendencies are for your particular gun, you can find a scope that will help you hit the game exactly where you intend for the pellet to strike.

Pellet gun hunting is capable of being really fun and enjoyable, and it is a great way for younger shooters to learn how to hunt successfully. As long as you are careful about the considerations mentioned above, you can find this method of hunting to be truly rewarding in many different ways.

Practicing Safety With a Gun While Hunting

huntingGun safety is absolutely critical when it comes to handling firearms and hunting. It is important that you learn how you can practice safety with your gun in order to prevent any injuries not only to you, but also to those that are around you as well.

It is vitally important that you practice gun safety while you are hunting. You should have protective gear, for example, even glasses or goggles and a pair of earplugs to make sure that you are protected.

The first step is to learn exactly how it is that your firearm operates. When you know how you should be correctly operating your weapon, then that is when you can truly prevent any injuries from occurring. When you become familiarized with the gun’s basic components, you will be safer when you are hunting. Learn basic gun safety and also you should be practicing how to load ammunition into the gun properly and safely.

Now you are going to want to keep your rifle, gun and any other weapons that you are using pointed away from yourself and any other person while you are hunting. There is no telling when a gun can go off – You don’t want to be pointing your gun at someone when it accidently misfires!

You should only ever make use of the right type of ammunition when you are hunting with your firearm. You should never simply experiment with different types of ammunition if they were not specifically designed to suit your firearm. If you use incorrect ammunition, you could end up misfiring and seriously hurting yourself or someone else.

You should absolutely never put your finger on the trigger of your gun unless you are actually ready to take a shot. You should make it a habit to rest your finger on the guard of the gun or the gun’s side rather than on the trigger for this very reason.

You are going to want to make sure that you know exactly what you are shooting at during any point in time. You should make sure that you are observing anything and everything around you. If there are people close by to your target, then no, it is not safe for you to shoot.

Make sure that you are wearing protection both for your eyes and your ears. You should always have a set of shooting goggles or a pair of glasses on hand when you are hunting so that debris does not enter into your eyes. You should wear earplugs when you are actually shooting so that your hearing does not sustain any damage.

Finally, you are going to want to avoid taking any medications or refrain from drinking any alcoholic beverages that can impair your judgment or cause drowsiness. These can cause problems with your judgment, which is the first step to experiencing or causing an injury while hunting.

Choosing your Shotgun

shotgunIf you are looking for a firearm that can be useful for a variety of different purposes, then the shotgun is one of the greatest options that you can consider. Aside from the fact that the shotgun is useful for recreational purposes, law enforcement, hunting, personal defense, sporting and military purposes it is also easier to aim because it offers widespread shots. This is a firearm that can be used by professional marksmen and beginner marksmen alike, and they are generally legal for ownership for a myriad of different purposes. Before you choose which type of shotgun you intend to buy, however, it would be wise to put some effort into not only researching the different options available to you, but also trying each one out to determine which will best suit your needs.

Choosing based on Action -

Different types of shotguns can be classified both by their features and their actions. In terms of action, you are provided with a number of different choices including auto loading, semi automatic, hinged, break action, slide action and pump action shotguns.

Auto loading shot guns can fire automatically, as well as extracting and reloading automatically every time the trigger is pulled. These shotguns offer a little recoil, and a good cycling speed even when you are performing continuous shots. Hinged shotguns on the other hand have a side by side, a rifle third, or a rifle caliber barrel depending on which shotgun you pick up. These shotguns are further classified depending on their individual barrel configurations and whether they are single shot, over and under shot or side by side shot. The shells of slide shotguns are loaded through the side, and the action opens up to eject the shells when the slide moves backwards. The slide will also pump forward each time that you fire.

Choosing based on Features -

Different types of shotguns can also be chosen based on their features, including double barreled shotguns and sawn off shotguns. The latter type of shotgun is characterized by a customized design which features a shortened barrel, concealing the gun’s action. These are lighter shotguns that can fire on short distances of up to two thirds the distance achieved by ordinary shotguns.

On the other hand, however, there are double barreled shotguns that feature two different barrels which are arranged side by side, or on top of each other. You can fire a single double barreled shotgun twice with a single firing action, and the shots are fired together toward a single target, making this an excellent option for hunting purposes.

Choosing the right shotgun when you go hunting is ultimately up to you. If you want to get the most out of your hunting endeavor though, it is important that you weigh your options well and get a feel for what is available out there for you before you make a purchase.

How to Use Hunting Decoys

hungrydeerLearning how to make use of hunting decoys can be a very important part of your hunting experience. Regardless if you are new to hunting, or if you are a seasoned veteran of the fields and forests, learning how to use decoys as part of your hunting can advance things to a whole new level, and give you that extra advantage that improves your results. Using decoys is moderately easy. Along with your usual tools for hunting, you will need: decoys, scent-eliminating spray and soap, a Buck archery target, and a windsock.

For deer hunting:

  1. You will need to keep your decoy as scent free as you possibly can. Wash it in the scent and odor eliminating soap, followed by a liberal spraying down with scent removing spray before the hunt. Deer are incredibly sensitive to smells, and so your hunting efforts will be for naught if you cannot get a dear anywhere near you due to scent alerting them to your presence.
  2. Scout out the place you wish to deploy your decoy to that is 15 to 25 yards away from the blind or stand if bow hunting. If you are using a rifle, you can place the decoy even further away. An ideal place is going to be somewhere close to an edge of a field where the forest begins and the trees and the shrubs begin to thicken.
  3. Make sure your decoy is placed where other deer are known to congregate, and so will expect to see another deer there. A deer in a strange place will seem odd, and may only serve to scare potential targets away.
  4. Make sure to pose your decoy in a feeding position. This is the most likely, most reliable, and most effective stance you could pose your decoy in.
  5. During the rutting season, use a doe decoy if you want the best results. Take a small colored rag in a neutral shade and spray it with what is known as “doe in estrus”, which is a scent that resembles the scent of a doe in heat. Attach it to the decoys tail.
  6. You can also use a Buck archery target as a decoy. Try to make sounds like a challenging buck might in order to attract other challenging bucks and does looking for a potential mate alike.

For waterfowl hunting:

  1. It needs to be remembered that waterfowl both take off and land facing into the wind. Now keep this information in mind while setting up your decoys, and be sure to set them in front of you while you have your back to the wind.
  2. Be sure to leave lots of room for potential targets among your decoys. Too many decoys in the water will actually harm more than it helps.
  3. Use feeding or sleeping duck decoys, herons, or even swans in order to create confidence in the target.
  4. Be sure to use a unique spread of decoys when setting up. Give the target something different that will attract them.
