A lot of hunters that are unsuccessful are in such a position because they set up anywhere they can in the woods and simply hope that a deer is going to go by. Other people may set up near a rub, simply hoping that a monster buck is going to stroll right up to their stand while they are hunting. This may be fine and good for some hunters, like some gun hunters for example, because they can touch a deer as far as 300 yards. But if you are a bowhunter, then you are going to need to be within 20 yards or 30 yards, and you are going to need to shoot at just the right moment, and so these techniques simply are not going to be successful and therefore you need to find another tactic in order to find your deer.
The best thing that you can do is to take steps that will increase your odds in a proven way. What this means is walking into the woods with a fairly accurate educated guess about where today’s deer are going to be. The first question that is asked is where are the deer going to be bedded? The time for you to find this out is during the spring and the summer when travel patterns aren’t going to be changed. You should get into the roughest, thickest and ugliest cover that you can find such as swamps and sticker bushes, where it seems impossible to get, and that is where you are going to find the beds you are looking for. When you get there, you should have no trouble finding these bedding areas, as they will be all mashed down and looking rather cozy.
Now that you are familiar with the bedding areas for the herd that you intend to hunt, remember that there are going to be multiple bending areas on your hunting grounds, then you can mark them using a topo map or a satellite picture to keep track of where you’re going. Continue marking your map up with old rubs, current trails, disused trails and possible food sources for your targets. All of these things are going to be clues when it comes to determining what is currently going on with the herd that you are targeting. If the hunting season has already begun for the year, then you may want to take it easy when it comes to the hunt for bedding areas and just assume that the thickest cover that you can find is going to be a good resource for deer.
Once you have marked all the sign areas, you can take a hard look at your map and determine which direction the deep appear to be moving into during the evening hours. Are they looping back to the same bedding areas, or choosing a different area from the morning for the evening. Once you have figured out the patterns of the deer, you are very close to understanding the best possible place for you to set up.

An archery hunt makes a hunter feel like part of the natural world. Archery is an ancient practice and hunting with a bow and arrow can make man feel more connected with his natural environment. Whether someone is an experienced archer or about to go on their first archery hunt, probably the most important consideration is safety. Archery hunting is far safer than hunting with ammunition. But that doesn’t mean accidents can happen. Be aware of yourself and your surrounding environment to keep your archery hunt safe at all times.
One of the most important safety considerations is that your bow is in good shape. A compound bow that is fired improperly such as being pulled back and released without an arrow, will sustain damage over time. The pulleys can loosen from having to absorb the shock repeatedly. If the compound bow wasn’t stored properly, it can be warped or have other problems that can cause it to release an arrow improperly and send it in the direction you don’t expect. When hunting season is out, you should store your compound bow in a temperature controlled area and treat with care.
In fact, if you love to archery hunt then there’s no reason your bow should be stored for a long period of time at all. The best way to get a trophy kill during hunting season is to practice when hunting season is out. Regular target practice is one of the best ways to improve your hunting. It will also keep your bow from suffering from neglect and the problems it causes. If you haven’t used your bow in some time, you may want to go ahead and change the string just as a precaution. On the other hand, if you’ve been practicing heavily, putting a fresh string on before hunting season may also be a good idea.
Accidents can happen when you’re not even using your compound bow. Just carrying the arrows and accidentally falling can be disastrous. That’s why you need a quiver that holds them firmly and shields the tips. It needs to be a sealed quiver that completely covers those tips to avoid accidental pokes. You’ll also want to make sure the quiver has cushioning in the bottom or you put cushioning in to keep the arrows from rubbing together and chipping or wearing down the tips.
In archery hunting there are few mistakes where the hunter actually thinks they’re aiming at an animal but it’s another person. Because 20 to 25 yards is about the average distance between you and the animal, that doesn’t leave much room for mistaking people as the game. But that doesn’t mean it can’t happen. You can’t assume that everyone takes the precautions you do as far as making themselves known to other hunters. Never loose the arrow unless you’re absolutely sure of what you’re shooting at.
Also, a first aid kit, extra water and a compass to help you in case you get turned around in the woods are good safety precautions whether you’re on an archery hunt or you have ammunition.

The hunting laws in your area are necessary reading before you go on a hunt. While some people think it’s fun or a bit of a joke to hunt and fish without licenses or permits and basically do what they want, hunting laws should be taken seriously. They’re very often put in place for the safety and protection of hunters as well as other people. That shouldn’t be taken lightly. They should be respected to make sure that you stay as safe as possible and pedestrians stay safe, and to make hunting season enjoyable and worry free for everyone.
There also may be hunting laws put in place to protect the animals from being over-hunted or abused. By and large, hunters respect the animals that they’re hunting. They’re an important food source for many families and they provide a lot of enjoyment for the hunter who enjoys the chase. Respecting the animals as well as people means following hunting laws.
One of the most important hunting laws to follow is not hunting out of season. If you hunt deer when deer season is already gone, you’re considered a poacher. Poachers aren’t very well-respected in the hunting community because they’re refusing to follow the same rules that govern everyone else. It can prove dangerous because people aren’t expecting to find anyone shooting at animals and may not be prepared. Many people who are going to be out during various hunting seasons will dress in reflective bright colors to avoid being mistaken for an animal. Poachers are putting them at risk by being out and shooting during the off-season. A poacher can also be fined and imprisoned for hunting off-season. Always be aware of the hunting laws and the dates in your area.
Also, be aware that each area can make its own laws and while some may not make sense to you, they still have to be followed. There are various laws that affect shotgun and rifle hunting and separate laws often that affect bow hunting. As an example of laws that are put in place to protect both people and animals, there’s a law in many areas about the smallest amount of draw a bow can have when used for hunting. In Texas for example, a compound bow used for hunting must have at least a 40 pound draw unless the hunter is using it to hunt squirrel.
Why does it matter if the bow has that minimum draw? Because the bow with less draw weight behind it is less likely to be able to kill an animal. It’s more likely to simply wound and animal and then animal may die of those wounds later after its bolted to where the hunter can’t find it. It can cause unnecessary suffering. And in some cases, a wounded animal that’s in pain may actually turn on the hunter. Animals are wild and unpredictable so using a compound bow that’s probably not going to be able to deliver a killing shot is simply irresponsible.

By bringing the right basic hunting gear to your hunting adventure, you will be basically ensuring that you are safer and that you hunt better at the same time.
You need to keep warm, meaning that you need hunting gloves, a hunting cap, a hunting jacket, and other protective gear. You also need gear that will protect you from the sun or other elements that you may be exposed to while on your trip. A lot of the basic hunting gear that you will need can be found online, and there are a variety of different types, sizes, colors, styles and brand names for you to choose from when it comes to finding the right basic hunting gear for your needs. Going the cheap route may be okay when you are just starting out, but having all the right gear and all the best gear is the best way to make sure that you are safe, sound and successful next time you go out hunting. The more you know about having the right gear, the better off you will be because then you can ensure that you have the right gear and that you are properly protected at all times, which is what having the right types of hunting gear is really all about in the grand scheme of things.

Pheasant hunting lodges are the perfect place for the person who loves to hunt pheasant. This can take pheasant hunting from monotonous and almost a competition sport with other hunters who go to the same area, to something much more enjoyable. Take some time to find pheasant hunting lodges near you or in an area where you plan to vacation and you’ll begin to enjoy it again.
Hunting lodges are like the base camp for skiers at a ski resort. After the day’s hunt, the hunters gather in the main room with a fireplace and home-cooked meals and lots of stories about the day’s adventures. Some hunting lodges are very basic and backwoods for the sportsman who likes to rough it. They provide a place to gather and often offer guides for guided hunting. Other hunting lodges are more luxurious.

The land is set up in a way that attracts pheasant. It has their favorite habitats and hiding places. And as a bonus to hunters, pheasant are the only birds that they’ll find. Often grouse, partridges and other small birds will find these places suitable as their homes as well. Because it’s practically a protected area out of hunting season, it often has an abundance of different types of birds for the hunter to enjoy hunting once the season opens.
And just like a fine hotel that allows pets, pheasant hunting lodges welcome your hunting dogs. While there may be a few lodges that don’t allow you to bring your own dog, they usually have hunting dogs that have been trained and are friendly that you can use while you’re there. The vast majority, however, understand that you have your four-legged companion trained to go on hunts with you and they allow you to bring your dog.
If you just really want to hunt pheasant than look for pheasant hunting lodges that are pretty exclusive to that species. There may be other bird species living there as well, but the focus is pheasant hunting. There are a variety of lodges that offer pheasant hunting but also offer partridge, dove, quail and other bird hunting. Choose the one that appeals to you the most.
You’ll also want to choose between pheasant hunting lodges that offer guided hunts or those that are self-guided. Guided hunts are ideal for someone inexperienced in pheasant hunting who needs a little bit of help where self-guided hunts are better for the hunter who likes solitude and is familiar with pheasant hunting.

If you’re considering going on hog hunts, you’re in for an exciting adventure. While this type of hunting is less well known in many areas where most people hunt for things like deer and ducks, hog hunts are becoming increasingly popular. Because hogs are small and fast, finding them and getting them is a real challenge. And it can even be exciting in a slightly dangerous way if you’re charged by a boar. This is not an uncommon occurrence and is something that you have to consider as part of the excitement of hog hunts. It’s necessary to be prepared and feel confident that you can react quickly to prevent injury.
There are many hog hunt outfitters out there that can help you get started. Probably if you look around your local area you’ll find several people who hog hunt, and there may even be associations for it. It’s one of the fastest growing sports in the nation. Many areas don’t have what’s known as a hog hunting season like they have deer season or duck season. So hog hunts can go on all throughout the year.
If you think hog hunts are something you’d like to enjoy, consider your personality. Even though it’s a very fast-paced and exciting sport when you spot a hog, it requires a lot of patience to get there. If you don’t have that patience that makes you able to wait until you get the right shot, you’re going to be frustrated a lot because you’re going to miss the mark. While some people can shoot a deer that’s running away and make a killing shot, a running hog is a very difficult target to hit. It’s necessary to be very patient for just the right moment when the hog is still.
It’s also a sport that you’ll be spending a lot of time doing in the evening. Hogs are very active usually just before the sun goes down so consider what you do during that time of day and whether or not you’re willing to rearrange it in order to go on hog hunts.
It’s also necessary for you to have the patience to make the right shot. That doesn’t just mean waiting to make it at the right time, but aiming at the right spot on the hog. Too many people aim for the head and end up seriously wounding the hog and causing it to suffer. You need to learn where to shoot the body of the hog to kill it quickly, preserve the meat and cause minimal suffering with a merciful kill. A guide or an experienced hog hunter can help you learn the kill zones, or the places to hit a hog that kill it quickly.
You also may end up walking a great distance tracking a hog that you’ve hit during hog hunts. Too many animals die after hog hunts because the hunter thinks they missed them and simply let them run away without following. That causes unnecessary suffering to the hogs and is an incredible waste. Be prepared to follow a great distance.

Cover – This is a term that is used to describe grass and vegetation and other types of environments that can conceal a bird from a hunting dog on land or in the water.
Cover Scents - This is a scent that is used to cover up a human during hunting so that their natural scent cannot be detected.
Cow – This is a term that is used to describe a female elk.
Creep - This describes the situation when the arrow is moving away from the wall, or it describes the anchor point while you are aiming and preparing to release.

When the air begins to get crisp, when the leaves begin to change, that is when you know the season for bow hunting is on us again. Bow season is coming, and it is not far off now. By this time, you should hopefully already have a game plan figured out regarding what your bow hunting season is going to entail. On the bright side, when you shoot your bow during the off season it will make it easier for you to keep up with regular maintenance for your bow, such as making sure that the strings are waxed, making sure that the strings are in good condition, making sure that there are no frays on the strings, making sure the limbs have no stress cracks, making sure that the noise dampeners and the vibration dampeners are in good condition, making sure the cams are all in tune and so on.
Bow Practice
It is important that you ensure that you get plenty of practicing time with your bow before you climb in the stand, and this is especially important if you are using new arrows, new sights or new broad heads that you are not used to. This is one of the most important steps in the prep for your bow before the season. There is nothing worse than stretching out the string for a one-in-a-lifetime kind of trophy only to see your arrow cruise beneath him because you didn’t zero in before the season opener. After all, if you’re spending a lot of money on your bow hunting gear, then why not make sure that you are justifying the investment by getting your practice in long before the real shots come into play.
It is important that you take the time to become re-familiarized with your pins and the yardage that you have them set for. If your pins are in need of adjustment, then make sure that you get all of the zeroing in and the adjusting before hand. Make sure that you are taking the time to get yourself acquainted with your bow all over again in order to achieve the best possible results. The preparation that you make pre season can be all the difference when it comes to catching that trophy buck you have always been waiting for, or going home empty handed.

Hunters who enjoy hunting big game get excited when elk season approaches. One way that you can help yourself if you’re aiming for a trophy elk or any elk at all is by practicing a great deal long before the season starts. Too many hunters leave the guns and bows and arrows in cabinets when hunting season is out. What they need to be doing is setting up targets and practicing.
Not only is it important practice with the weight of the arrows that you’ll be using when you hunt, it is important to practice hitting the target. Do you think you have a better chance of getting a trophy elk if you’ve been practicing for a few months or if the first time you shoot at an elk is the first time you’ve shot in a few months?
Just like an athlete or any type of sportsmen, hunters should train and that includes target practice. It makes you more familiar with your weapon and how to use it in different weather. And that will help you when elk season starts. Vary your practice schedule, as well. Practice shooting at targets from a variety of positions and angles so that you’re better prepared for the actual hunt. Try crouching or shooting from a low position just as you might in a natural elk hunt.
Stake your claim on land as early as possible. You should go out and scout the area that you’ll be hunting in if at all possible to look for elk. Make sure that you know who owns the land you’re on and if it’s privately owned that you have permission from the landowner. Walk the land carefully before elk season starts. Become familiar with it and scout out areas where elk may be once you’re ready to hunt.
Don’t wait for elk season to inspect all of your equipment and make sure everything is in working order. If you discover something as soon as the season starts you could end up waiting too long while it’s being fixed and miss part of the season.
And scent is an important step that some hunters don’t think is necessary. Just because some hunters somewhere managed to get a trophy elk or deer without worrying about his scent doesn’t mean that it will work for you. Do everything you can to minimize your scent in the area. Always be aware of which direction the wind’s blowing in so that you won’t get downwind from any animals. You can buy a little spray bottle designed just for this or simply wet day fingertip and gauge the direction of the wind.
Elk actually have very heightened sense of smell, more than many other game, so do everything you can to minimize your natural scents like soap smells and smells from shampoo. Use unscented products as well as unscented laundry detergent. And make sure that your clothing isn’t exposed to anything with a strong scent like a campfire. Also consider purchasing a product designed to hide your scent from the animals.

As far as sports go, hunting and ping pong really have nothing alike. However, hunters who are preparing to enjoy the 2009 archery hunting season have been forced to watch a rather tedious series of parries as the Game Commission’s board of directors lodge a series of serve and return assaults that are much more suggestive of a match of tennis or ping pong than anything that has to do with hunting.
The battle is all about hunting with crossbows. This is because commissioners are currently sparring regarding what degree crossbows can be used to, and how they should be capable of being equipped, mainly because these seasons were previously reserved specifically for traditional, conventional archery and not crossbow archery.
For the past few decades, hunting with the use of a crossbow during the conventional archery season was completely prohibited in the state of Pennsylvania, unless it came down to a hunter possessing a permit that declared him or her to be physically incapable of using the more conventional form of archery equipment, better known as a vertical bow. This “disabled person permit” would allow them, and only them, to operate a crossbow during the standard archery season.
It was in the late 1990s that the commission finally approved the use of crossbows during the standard archery season, but only in specific urban areas. The regulation went on to be amended later, including a number of Management units, covering nearly the same territory. Then the pace picked up further when the October 2008 meeting was held by the Game Commission. The board voted for a preliminary approval of the full inclusion of all types of crossbows during archery seasons for big game, and the proposal won a 4-3 approval rate in January of 2009.
Those who did not vote for this measure are still fighting, however, because they do not feel as if the issue should be rushed on, and they are more than willing to voice their opinions accordingly. There are some very different opinions on this Game Commission, which is making it difficult for a final solution to be reached regarding this issue. There was such strong opposition present from the more conventional bow hunters in the commission that it began legal for a crossbow to be used while hunting bear and deer across the state of Pennsylvania during the upcoming archery seasons in 2009.
Some of the commissioners do not believe that using automatic archery equipment like the crossbow is going to cause any harm during the hunting season. On the other hand, some commissioners felt that biological impact may be beyond our understanding, and while hunter opportunities may be widened, the amount of damage done biologically may also be widened as well. This match is likely to continue for some time yet as both sides of the situation continue to argue about the merits and flaws of crossbows being used during the conventional archery seasons.
