For experienced hunters or new hunters alike, caribou hunting is an adventure. Those who are experienced hunting other game animals like deer or elk will find a lot familiar about caribou hunting and yet it will be unlike anything they’ve done. People new to hunting will find caribou hunting an exciting sport.
Caribou hunting is less talked about than things like deer hunting, elk hunting or even moose hunting. But caribou meat is delicious, and their hide is valuable as well. The horns of the caribou can also be sold so there are many practical reasons for hunting caribou. The sheer size of the creatures and their stealth and cunning make them a challenge as well.
For the new caribou hunter, a guide is essential. Whether you’re going to go with a paid guide or just a friend or acquaintance who’s a very experienced caribou hunter, the tips and tricks you’ll learn are invaluable. If you don’t have any close friends or acquaintances who caribou hunt, then investing in a guided hunt is probably one of the best things you can do to make sure that you will enjoy caribou hunting for years to come.
Outfitters will set you up with a guide and take you to the prime hunting spots. They can’t guarantee that you’ll find a caribou or get a shot at one but the odds of this are maximized when you go on a guided hunt with a very experienced guide. They can also help you avoid some of the pitfalls of caribou hunting such as not understanding all the laws surrounding it and complying with them.
Some areas have strict limits on caribou hunting while others are more relaxed. But you’ll need to follow local gun laws and any requirements as far as how you dress the caribou in the field as well as the weapons you use to hunt the animals. The last thing you want to do is have a successful caribou hunt and end up with a hefty fine because you used improper ammunition or you improperly butchered the animal. An experienced guide can lead you through that maze of technicalities.
You’ll also get one-on-one instruction in how to find caribou tracks and figure out where they’re most likely to be found. Through droppings, tracks, and scrapes and rubbings on the sides of trees, guides can pretty much show you the paths that the caribou take each day. Depending on where you hunt, you may be limited to using either a rifle or a compound bow. Areas that allow both typically have a very distinct season for rifle hunters and a distinct season for those who use a bow.
A guide can tell you the best type of ammunition to use as well as the best weight and point weight of arrows, depending on what you choose. This is an important choice because it will determine how quickly and mercifully you kill the animal. A guide or mentor can also teach you how to properly field dress the animal after a successful day of caribou hunting.

If you’re ready to go on an elk hunt, there are no doubt a variety of elk outfitters for you to choose from. If you’re hunting in a different state then you may not know where to start. It’s a good idea, if you’ve never been on an elk hunt before, to choose an outfitter that offers a very experienced guide. A guided elk hunt might sound less adventurous than simply going off into the wild on your own, but it will be safer and you’ll learn a lot about elk hunting. Choosing elk outfitters that offer guides is a good way to make sure you understand the basics and learn a little bit about the animals to make hunting easier.
Probably one of the most important things to consider when you’re looking at elk outfitters is that you need to plan in advance. The best ones will book early. You want to decide if you want a guided hunt or not, and don’t forget to consider that if you’re new to elk hunting a guided will make it safer. You can also choose what’s known as a drop camp.
A drop camp at an elk outfitters involves you being essentially dropped off at camp where you can leave to go elk hunting and then left on your own to hunt. Whether you’re choosing a guided hunt or a drop camp is very important to be clear with the elk outfitters on what they provide and what you must provide.
Don’t be stuck in a camp on an elk hunt without the proper equipment. That can happen if you assume that the elk outfitters provides certain things and they actually don’t. Ask for a list of the equipment they provide or a list of what you need to provide, and make sure you understand whether that’s part of the package deal or if there is an extra charge.
You might also want to check your elk outfitters with your state regulatory agency. That will help you know if they are maintaining a good record of safety and quality. For this reason, choosing the cheapest elk outfitters just so you can get to elk hunt is probably not a good idea. Just because they’re the cheapest of course doesn’t mean they are the worst, but if you choose an elk outfitter that’s a little bit more expensive, you have a better chance of getting top quality service.
That’s absolutely not to say you can’t get quality of all kinds from a budget-priced elk outfitter. But it’s just a general rule to follow. To compare elk outfitters, ask each for a list of the equipment they provide and they expect you to provide, and also ask for a standardized price list so you can see how the cost of your trip breaks down into individual areas. Some outfitters rent a variety of equipment to help you if you don’t have it with you. If not, ask specifically about how to transport and contain certain items.

Guided elk hunts are good for both beginners and experienced hunters. Whether you’ve been hunting for years but have never hunted elk or whether you’ve never hunted anything, a guided hunt can help you get familiar with the sport. And for those who’ve been hunting elk for years, a guided hunt can simply teach a few new tricks and offer a new twist on hunting. Those who typically go alone or with just one or two people might enjoy guided hunts for a change because of the companionship and camaraderie you feel with the other hunters.
For those who are new to elk hunting, elk are huge animals and they’re also very smart. That’s why many hunters prefer elk because they feel like they’re being challenged by tracking the animal. Many people prefer to bow hunt elk because it feels like a more natural way of hunting that harkens back to our ancestors. It’s also more challenging than hunting with a rifle or shotgun.
If you’re an experienced bow hunter then you understand what goes into choosing the right type of arrow and what goes into proper technique of shooting your bow. If you’re new to bow hunting, you need a bow with enough weight behind the arrow to bring down a large animal like an elk. But if you’re new to bow hunting you can’t start out with bow like that. You typically have to start with a lighter weight bow and work your way up. Don’t expect to hit the target at first when you’re practicing. And once you master a lightweight bow, moving up to the next weight will affect your aim as well.
Bow hunting on guided elk hunts is challenging to because you need to make sure your arrows are capable of bringing down an elk. They need to be heavy enough with a heavy enough point to puncture the hide of the animal. Guided elk hunts can help you because there are people that are experienced and can tell you where to hit the animal to bring it down.
The guide will also help you learn about where to find elk and how to find their food sources and water sources to be able to find them. Elk behave differently during different times of the day as well as different times in the season. A good guide can help you understand that and make it more likely that you bring down an animal.
Guided elk hunts are also good for someone who’s never hunted in a tree stand before because many people hunt elk from a tree just as they would hunt deer. Having a guide show you how to set up a tree stand and how to get in and out of it safely can really help you feel more at ease elk hunting. Then you’ll be prepared to elk hunt on your own without a guide or with just a few friends who may not be experienced elk hunters either.
