Is a Hunting DVD Worth Watching?

People who don’t hunt or fish or participate in any outdoor sports often like to make fun of things like fishing programs or a hunting DVD. They can’t understand why anyone would want to watch something like someone else fishing or hunting. And while it’s true that many fishing and hunting videos aren’t action-packed, many hunters love them. Even if 20 minutes is spent just listening to the fishermen or the hunter talk about what they’re doing, the observant hunter is soaking up what they’re saying and figuring out how to put it to use on his own terms.

If you enjoy hunting and have never watched a hunting DVD, you’re really missing out on an educational experience. You can find a hunting DVD for every type of game from bison and bear to ducks and quail. Not only do these DVDs let you see beautiful outdoor areas that you might not be able to visit in person, you get the commentary from the experienced sportsmen who are making the DVDs.

Buy: The Modern Day Mountain Man Season 1, Brown Bear, Caribou, Dall Sheep, Wolf, Elk, and Mule Deer Hunting from Alaska and Idaho

Listening to them talk about what they’re doing, how they’re doing it, how they planned it and what they expect can be a very educational especially for someone new to hunting. If guided hunts aren’t for you and you don’t have any close friends that you can regularly go hunting with, a hunting DVD can really fill in that gap of knowledge and experience. Just don’t make the mistake of thinking that since you’ve watched one of those DVDs that you actually have that experience. Be sure and don’t become overconfident, especially since you’re using a weapon.

If you do have friends that you hunt with or you’re not against the idea of a guided hunt, you can still really enjoy a hunting DVD. Some are designed just to show you a special hunt where they’d bagged a trophy winning animal or made an impressive kill. Other hunting DVDs are set up in a certain way to convey specific information.

You might find a white tailed deer hunting DVD that gives you several specific pointers about how to have your first white tailed deer hunt. Another deer hunting DVD may simply be scenes from several of the sportsman’s most impressive hunting trips. Duck hunting DVDs may demonstrate the best calls for certain types of ducks or how to locate a spot and build a blind. Other DVDs may take you on a guided hunt and help to advertise a specific hunting lodge or line of hunting products and gear.

Buy: Majestic Whitetails

Regardless of the focus of the hunting DVD, you can mine it for the information that you really want. Just watching the sportsman’s technique, whether they’re shooting or using a compound bow, can give you a point of reference to compare your own techniques you. And even if you doubt whether or not you’ll get anything educational from the DVD, you still may enjoy following along with the professional hunter and just seeing a different style and technique than your own.

How to Duck Hunt

When you’re ready to learn how to duck hunt, the best thing you can do is find someone in your local area who has experience and take them with you. Perhaps a good friend of yours is a duck hunter and can help you learn the basics. If not, you may be able to find a guide through a local hunting association.

Some people learn how to duck hunt simply by reading about it and going out and doing it on their own. This is not the ideal situation because there are pointers and tricks you need to pick up from other people. But whether or not you go alone or with a guide, there are several things you should bear in mind.

As with any hunting, duck hunting requires you to be camouflaged. Choose clothing that will help you blend in with your blind or the surrounding area when you’re lying in wait for ducks. Because you’ll be up in the middle of the night and duck hunting is best when it’s cold, you want plenty of warm clothes that also camouflage you. Beware of exposed skin that can become far more chilled than you realize when you’re concentrating on attracting ducks. Make sure you have your head covered to preserve warmth and extra gloves in case a pair gets wet or damaged.

Waders are another important piece of duck hunt equipment. You can get these in a camouflage print or just go with standard green or brown which blends in well also. If you’re in a warm weather area, you can find lightweight waders to keep yourself from getting too hot. In many areas, being too cold is a concern, in which case you can find insulated waders.

No information on how to duck hunt would be complete without talking about decoys. First of all, it’s important to purchase to the right decoys. Different ducks are attracted to different decoys. This is where a guide or an experienced duck hunter in your area can really come in handy. They can tell you which types of decoys work best in your area and which type work best depending on the exact area you’ll be hunting, whether you’re in a marsh or on the open lake. Decoys can prove to be expensive so you want to purchase the right ones from the beginning and not waste your money on decoys that aren’t going to work for you.

If you’re unsure about which decoys to purchase and can’t seem to find information for your area, go online and look for used decoys. You may be able to find them in places like eBay or in local newspapers. That can help you keep your costs down while you’re trying to figure out which are the best. If the seller is local ask why they’re selling to make sure that they’re not selling the decoys because they purchased the wrong kind, too.

Also, don’t forget that you’ll want to learn how to duck hunt by using a duck call. Learn to mimic the sounds that local ducks make rather than just blowing it as loud as possible. Softer sounds and shorter sounds will attract more ducks and give you a better experience.

Boats for Hunting Ducks

Hunting ducks is typically either done in a blind or in the water or next to the bank, or in a boat. Boats for hunting ducks are set up differently than typical fishing boats or pleasure boats. These boats have a flat hull that gives them a very low profile against the water. This makes the boat and you much less noticeable to ducks and passing animals.

But when you’re hunting ducks, the type of boat you use does not determine how many ducks you get. What you do in the boat will make much more of a difference than the boat itself. First of all, you have to learn to be quiet and still. You’ve set your duck decoys and you’re ready and waiting for a shot. If you fidget very much, just the noise of your clothes brushing together may disturb nervous birds and keep them from coming near.

Don’t expect ducks to flock in as soon as you set your decoys. Once you’ve done that, you have to play a waiting game with them and simply be quiet and still is much possible to allow it to happen. If you plan on calling ducks, do it with restraint. Don’t try to out bellow the ducks thinking that the loudest call will attract them more. Try to sound like them with soft, short quacks and sounds. This will attract them much better than an unnatural sounding call.

Boats for hunting ducks do keep you very well camouflaged. Because you want to get flat in the boat, and the best time for hunting ducks is in the cold weather, be sure and bundle up. When you’re on cold water in a boat and lying in the belly of it, you can very quickly get far too cold. Flat bottomed John boats can also be used because of their flat profile and their width which makes them more stable in the water.

These type of boats let you go through high reeds and into places where traditionally shaped boats would scrape the ground. Many avid duck hunters build their own boats for hunting ducks or they do purchase a wide jon boat. Others use a traditional fishing boat to go to the blind where they lay in wait for the ducks rather than in the boat itself. Then they simply use the boat to retrieve the ducks.

Either way, you need to dress warmly and plan to be very patient. Just like the type of football or golf ball a sportsman uses won’t determine how successful he is at the sport, the type of boat or blind you choose will not determine how successful you are at duck hunting. The right kind of boats for hunting ducks can help you lay in wait in the center of the water near the decoys without being as noticeable to the ducks. But ultimately, your calling technique and your patience as well as the trueness of your aim will determine how many ducks you get more than the boat’s shape or size.

Successful Grouse Hunting

Grouse hunting is popular sport for hunters who like the challenge of hunting birds. Grouse hunting often gets grouped in with partridge and quail hunting because there are ranches and land with fairly enclosed areas that offer grouse hunting tours and guided hunts.

Grouse hunting is a sport that many people consider a bit more exciting than hunting things like partridges and quail because of the different type of flight a grouse has. And unlike duck hunting where a hunter lies in wait with decoys and a call to attract ducks, grouse hunting is done with a line of hunters pushing forward and others with them trying to flush out the grouse. Many people like to think of this type of hunting as a sort of skeet shoot hunting. You walk and wait for the birds to be flushed out. As they fly up, you take aim and shoot.

The line of hunters will have people on each end called flaggers to help flush the birds out. This is a safety concern you need to be aware of–that unarmed people are on each end of the line. It’s important that when the grouse take flight you not turn completely to the side going after these birds because of the safety concern. Go after the birds that are in your direct line of sight in front of you and just slightly to each side but never turn at a sharp angle going after shot.

You want to make sure you have the proper clothing before you go grouse hunting. Because you may be walking through very wet and marshy areas, depending on where you go, you’ll want to have properly waterproofed boots. Boots that also have some sort of insulation inside them can also help keep your feet stay warm. You want to dress for the weather which is often on the cool side by wearing insulated clothing and dressing in layers so that you can take layers off or put them on depending on how you feel. You don’t want to be out on the grouse hunt and realize that you’re burning up because you overdressed. If you dress in layers you can simply remove a layer to become comfortable again. Or if you find that you’re too cold you can put a layer on.

Probably the most important grouse hunting tip is to simply avoid swinging your gun. Because grouse are hunted in that line, you are responsible for the safety of the person on each side of you. Here’s where it can pay to be sober while you’re hunting. While there is nothing wrong with drinking, having even a drink or two before you wield a weapon is a bad idea. You could get excited by the rush of grouse flying up into the air and swing into the line going after one, putting your fellow hunters at risk. Grouse hunting is a sport best done completely sober and with concentration on the task at hand.

Best Duck Hunting Tips

If you seem to think that duck hunting simply amounts to hiding until birds fly by, there are several duck hunting tips that can help you understand the sport better and help you do better when you’re out on a hunt. There’s much more to hunting ducks than simply hiding and waiting for them to fly overhead or land on the water.

If you’re serious about duck hunting, then record your progress. People who set goals and write their goals and their progress toward them down do much better than people who don’t. And because duck hunting is something that involves a lot of observation and paying attention to trends and surroundings, keeping a sort of diary of your duck hunts can help you see patterns and get the most out of your time in a boat or a blind. Being able to look back through your diary at what happened when you didn’t get any ducks and what happened when you did can make all the difference in how successful you are duck hunting in the long term.

This is a good tip to follow whether you hunt ducks or any other game animals or fowl. Keeping a written record of the weather conditions, how you felt, what time you went, and the kinds of decoys or calls you used is a way of recording vital information to discover what works and what doesn’t.

Another important duck hunting tip is to use the right decoys. A decoy isn’t just a wooden shape like a duck with a little paint on it. While some may seem to have good luck with just those types of decoys, better ones offer a better chance at attracting ducks. In fact, if you find a few brands you like you can mix and match them to get different colors and shapes as well as sizes in your decoy spread. The more natural it looks, the better off you’ll be. If you have large and small decoys it will look like there are adults and amateur ducks together and that will give the decoy spread a very ordinary appearance.

Also, rather than just setting decoys and walking away to hide, add some movement. A cord hooked to the decoys that you can pull on makes it appear as if they’re moving around on the water and will make the decoy spread look even more natural to ducks. Some decoys can be purchased that have magnets inside or other devices that will keep them moving a little bit on their own. But if you can move them at will, it will look more natural and you’ll have a better chance of attracting ducks.

Finally, don’t think that one specific tip will make or break your duck hunting. You can have the best decoys and a lousy call and not attract a single duck. Or you can have a great duck call but decoys that keep the birds from landing. Your blind or boat might draw too much attention, or it just may not be your day. Still, following these tips increases your chances of bagging your limit of ducks.

Hog Hunts

If you’re considering going on hog hunts, you’re in for an exciting adventure. While this type of hunting is less well known in many areas where most people hunt for things like deer and ducks, hog hunts are becoming increasingly popular. Because hogs are small and fast, finding them and getting them is a real challenge. And it can even be exciting in a slightly dangerous way if you’re charged by a boar. This is not an uncommon occurrence and is something that you have to consider as part of the excitement of hog hunts. It’s necessary to be prepared and feel confident that you can react quickly to prevent injury.

There are many hog hunt outfitters out there that can help you get started. Probably if you look around your local area you’ll find several people who hog hunt, and there may even be associations for it. It’s one of the fastest growing sports in the nation. Many areas don’t have what’s known as a hog hunting season like they have deer season or duck season. So hog hunts can go on all throughout the year.

If you think hog hunts are something you’d like to enjoy, consider your personality. Even though it’s a very fast-paced and exciting sport when you spot a hog, it requires a lot of patience to get there. If you don’t have that patience that makes you able to wait until you get the right shot, you’re going to be frustrated a lot because you’re going to miss the mark. While some people can shoot a deer that’s running away and make a killing shot, a running hog is a very difficult target to hit. It’s necessary to be very patient for just the right moment when the hog is still.

It’s also a sport that you’ll be spending a lot of time doing in the evening. Hogs are very active usually just before the sun goes down so consider what you do during that time of day and whether or not you’re willing to rearrange it in order to go on hog hunts.

It’s also necessary for you to have the patience to make the right shot. That doesn’t just mean waiting to make it at the right time, but aiming at the right spot on the hog. Too many people aim for the head and end up seriously wounding the hog and causing it to suffer. You need to learn where to shoot the body of the hog to kill it quickly, preserve the meat and cause minimal suffering with a merciful kill. A guide or an experienced hog hunter can help you learn the kill zones, or the places to hit a hog that kill it quickly.

You also may end up walking a great distance tracking a hog that you’ve hit during hog hunts. Too many animals die after hog hunts because the hunter thinks they missed them and simply let them run away without following. That causes unnecessary suffering to the hogs and is an incredible waste. Be prepared to follow a great distance.
