A tree hunt is something that most deer hunters look forward to. Many happy hours can be spent looking at stands and deciding which one to purchase. The tree stand is a great place to hunt from because it conceals your location even more than if you were on the ground in camouflage. It minimizes the chance of the deer catching your scent, seeing you or hearing you.
Planning a tree hunt takes a little bit of time in the beginning. You have to prepare the tree with your stand and steps to make it safer. First of all, you have to consider how you’re going to get your weapon into the stand. Install a step with a pulley so that you can haul the weapon up to the stand before you climb.
Something you do not want to do is to climb your tree while holding the weapon. Even if your stand is a high and you’re very agile, that’s asking for an accident to happen. Holding your gun as you climb is simply reckless behavior. You need to make plans to get your weapon into the stand without having to do that and putting yourself in a position where you could accidentally fire the gun while climbing.
You also want to keep an eye on the weather. You don’t want to be in a tree stand if the weather drops incredibly cold or if a storm comes in. You are more exposed to the cold air and elements while in a tree stand than while on the ground. And if a fast storm whips up while you’re in a tree stand, especially if there is very much wind, it can be very dangerous.
Where you’ll put your tree hunt stand is important as well. You want to put it in an area where it doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb on the side of the tree. But it also needs to be in a place where nothing is going to be hanging between you and your line of sight. You want to choose an area where there’s cover but not so much cover that it interferes. This is where an experienced deer hunter can help you. Get advice from someone you know who regularly uses a tree hunt stand about where to put it on how to set it up and it will make the whole process much easier for you.
Choosing an area with lots of cover doesn’t just help you camouflage yourself but it means they’re more likely is deer that will frequent the area. Look for deer tracks when you’re deciding where put your tree hunt stand and that will help. You may also want to look around for tracks and find a few spots to put tree stands out. If you only have one tree hunt stand prepared and the wind happens to be blowing from behind you, it’s going to be hard to get a deer with your scent blowing toward them. Having more than one stand set up will help prevent that.

Hunting in duck blinds is vastly different than duck hunting in a boat. You’ll also have to take a boat to your blind, but the first step is finding a blind where you can hunt. Some people have a blind set up ahead and allow people to use it or they rent the use of it. But many duck hunting enthusiasts feel much better building their own duck blinds.
Sometimes a group of people will get together and build a duck blind and then share it. If you’re not familiar with the process of building a duck blind or you’re new to duck hunting, this will probably be the way for you to go. That way you have sort of a guide along the process. Maybe you can help someone build a duck blind which will help you learn how to do it.
If you want to build one on your own, start with some treated pieces of lumber 2×6, 4×4, and 2×4. You also need some galvanized screws and a piece of plywood, 5/8-inch is big enough, to place over your subfloor so you’ll have a flat surface. Use 2×6 planks to build the base of the floor with joists no more than 16 inches apart. Then take your plywood and make sure you have holes cut for the 4×4 posts in each corner, then screw it to your floor base.
You want your 4×4 posts to be different lengths in the front and back. The back will be much higher and probably around 50″ to 53″ tall. The roof will slope down toward the front where you want the post to be only around 48″ tall. Be sure that you cut the posts in the back at an angle so that the roof slopes forward. Use the 2×4 pieces to frame out the blind starting with the top of the front post to a back post and work from there. Continue around until you have level 2×4 posts around the outside with one side open to enter the blind.
Once you’ve built a few duck blinds the process is easier and faster. Once they’re built, you paint them with flat paint that’s dark and blends into the surrounding area like brown or dark green. Many people then use things like camouflage tarps or netting and even actual branches and natural greenery from the surrounding area to make it blend in even more.
Just be sure that you leave yourself a space to see out of so you can watch for ducks. You’ll also want to make sure that the opening in the front of your duck blinds is big enough for you to easily point the gun out without any sort of netting or shrubbery hanging down to get in your way. You want to be able to get a clear shot without jostling anything on the outside of the duck blinds and drawing the ducks’ attention. That can make them scatter and ruin your day’s hunting trip.

If you dream of that trophy hunt where you’ll bag a prize-winning animal, you might consider investing in a GPS system. If that feels like cheating to you, take heart in knowing that many people hunt this way today. You can buy GPS systems with built-in compasses, which actually seem redundant considering that it’s a GPS but that really aren’t, and camouflage casings to make them perfect for hunting. The compass can certainly come in handy in helping you feel your way and learn to navigate on your own. You’ll need to use your locations to help set up the GPS to work best for you.
Just like the GPS system in a vehicle is designed to point out the restaurants and other attractions in an area, a hunting GPS may contain information about hunting seasons, animal habits and other interesting information that can help you have a successful trophy hunt.
Hunting GPS systems let you store a number of points to help you navigate through that same area at a later date. You can store entire paths that you’ve used to hunt and let the GPS lead you along those another time. A very handy feature for hunters is how a GPS system can give you exact times for sunsets, sunrise and distance and speed information.
Something to keep in mind if you do use a GPS, however, is not to let it make you lazy. Don’t rely on it as your sole method of navigation. While marking your points and paths on a GPS is a great way to not get lost and be able to follow your footsteps at a later date, be familiar with the area and confident that you could find your way out on your own if you had to. If the GPS unit should stop working for some reason, you don’t want to be far out in an area that you couldn’t navigate with a compass and your own instincts.
Anyone incapable of finding his or her way by following the sun and other markings as well as using a compass should not go into the woods alone. Decide to trophy hunt with a friend to be on the safe side. Many people who overestimate their ability to find a path soon realize that one tree looks the same as the next and that they have no idea where they are. It’s easy to panic in that situation, and panic will usually do nothing but get you further lost. Be sure you can navigate with the compass and find your way out before you venture out even with the most sophisticated GPS system.
Something that’s a great feature for people who hunt with dogs is the ability to track those dogs with the GPS. You put a unit on a dog’s collar and you can track its movements with the device. You can even do this if you have multiple dogs. This is a great feature for the hunter who takes dogs out and often has a hard time corralling them back in at the end of the hunt. Some GPS units even let you download certain hunting maps for your area, making them even more useful on that trophy hunt.

There is no shortage of specialized equipment that is available to hunters when it comes to hunting their chosen prey throughout the year. There are a number of different variables that determine what equipment a hunter is going to require including the animal that is being hunted, the setting where the hunter will be hunting the particular animal in question, the size of animal that the hunter expects to catch, any potential government regulations, and so forth. Before doing anything in terms of hunting, it is wise for you to check out the laws and regulations in your area.
There are several types of hunting, and each has its own “tools of the trade,” as it were:
* Baiting – Attracting animals through the use of decoys, bait, lures or other similar things. Decoys and lures can sometimes be hand made, and can be quite the collectors items.
* Blind or stand hunting - This form of hunting involves waiting from a hidden, sometimes elevated, position for the prey to wander by. The blind setup can be quite intricate, mounting to a tree and incorporating cover to mask the location of the hunters. Others can be as simple as a camouflaged tarp
* Calling - similar to baiting, but instead of a physical attractant, the animal is drawn to the hunter via a animal call. The animal call is a device that replicates the sound, even in the frequencies beyond human hearing. Some handmade calls are quite valuable and collectible.
* Camouflage – this is the technique where the hunter will combine clothing, terrain, and even scent to mask their locations. Different animals will respond to different forms of camouflage, so identifying what you will need is going to take a bit of research.
* Dogs – Animals are much better hunters than humans tend to be, given their need of hunting for survival in the wild. Employing the use of dogs for tracking and chasing game is very common because dogs can lead you not only to potential prey, but also to an animal that has been shot down if you cannot immediately tell where it has ended up. Dogs are especially proficient as retrieving fallen fowl.
* Driving – the technique of pushing the herd towards a certain direction, where a trap or other hunter may lie in wait. This task is easily performed by using special gun rounds that emit noises as opposed to firing ammo for penetration.
* Flushing – This is the act of forcing animals out from their hiding spots, and getting them to flee and expose themselves as a result. There are many tools for this type of flushing, some which are more effective than others. Some of these flushing tools will act to impersonate a predator in order to force the prey into flight.
* Netting – In this method, the primary mechanism for hunting is the use of nets to incapacitate the prey. The nets may be a passive part of a trap, or part of a net launching system.
* Persistence Hunting – Here, the hunter will use a variety of techniques to force the animal into exhaustion. A lot of the methods employed will involve tools that are meant to scare the animal into flight. This style of hunting requires much more endurance on your part, but is often quite rewarding in the end because the hunt ends on your terms.
* Scouting – This part of hunting involves studying and searching for an area that is truly prime for the act of hunting. Highly trained or well equipped hunters will be able to identify locations of high animal traffic.
* Stalking or still hunting – Here the hunter will use cat-like, silent movement to better prepare for the strike, or during tracking. This type of hunting is ideal for animals that spook easily and that can easily outrun you. Stalking or still hunting are excellent tactics for sneaking up on the prey so that you can get at a better vantage point without being seen or heard.
* Trapping – The hunter will employ the use of traps, be it snares, cages or what have it. Some traps are designed to catch animals unharmed. Most traps are designed for smaller animals, but there are also traps that are designed for larger prey.
After catching the prey, what comes into question is the intent of the hunter. Trophy hunters will take a part of the animal to use as a trophy; where as those hunting for food will prep and dress the animal before transport, and then do what is necessary for preparing the animal to become palatable.
Hunting is an exciting sport that gets more and more popular year after year. Hunting is something that can be self taught, or handed down from generation to generation.
