Plan a Safe Archery Hunt

An archery hunt makes a hunter feel like part of the natural world. Archery is an ancient practice and hunting with a bow and arrow can make man feel more connected with his natural environment. Whether someone is an experienced archer or about to go on their first archery hunt, probably the most important consideration is safety. Archery hunting is far safer than hunting with ammunition. But that doesn’t mean accidents can happen. Be aware of yourself and your surrounding environment to keep your archery hunt safe at all times.

One of the most important safety considerations is that your bow is in good shape. A compound bow that is fired improperly such as being pulled back and released without an arrow, will sustain damage over time. The pulleys can loosen from having to absorb the shock repeatedly. If the compound bow wasn’t stored properly, it can be warped or have other problems that can cause it to release an arrow improperly and send it in the direction you don’t expect. When hunting season is out, you should store your compound bow in a temperature controlled area and treat with care.

In fact, if you love to archery hunt then there’s no reason your bow should be stored for a long period of time at all. The best way to get a trophy kill during hunting season is to practice when hunting season is out. Regular target practice is one of the best ways to improve your hunting. It will also keep your bow from suffering from neglect and the problems it causes. If you haven’t used your bow in some time, you may want to go ahead and change the string just as a precaution. On the other hand, if you’ve been practicing heavily, putting a fresh string on before hunting season may also be a good idea.

Accidents can happen when you’re not even using your compound bow. Just carrying the arrows and accidentally falling can be disastrous. That’s why you need a quiver that holds them firmly and shields the tips. It needs to be a sealed quiver that completely covers those tips to avoid accidental pokes. You’ll also want to make sure the quiver has cushioning in the bottom or you put cushioning in to keep the arrows from rubbing together and chipping or wearing down the tips.

In archery hunting there are few mistakes where the hunter actually thinks they’re aiming at an animal but it’s another person. Because 20 to 25 yards is about the average distance between you and the animal, that doesn’t leave much room for mistaking people as the game. But that doesn’t mean it can’t happen. You can’t assume that everyone takes the precautions you do as far as making themselves known to other hunters. Never loose the arrow unless you’re absolutely sure of what you’re shooting at.

Also, a first aid kit, extra water and a compass to help you in case you get turned around in the woods are good safety precautions whether you’re on an archery hunt or you have ammunition.

Caribou Hunting

For experienced hunters or new hunters alike, caribou hunting is an adventure. Those who are experienced hunting other game animals like deer or elk will find a lot familiar about caribou hunting and yet it will be unlike anything they’ve done. People new to hunting will find caribou hunting an exciting sport.

Caribou hunting is less talked about than things like deer hunting, elk hunting or even moose hunting. But caribou meat is delicious, and their hide is valuable as well. The horns of the caribou can also be sold so there are many practical reasons for hunting caribou. The sheer size of the creatures and their stealth and cunning make them a challenge as well.

For the new caribou hunter, a guide is essential. Whether you’re going to go with a paid guide or just a friend or acquaintance who’s a very experienced caribou hunter, the tips and tricks you’ll learn are invaluable. If you don’t have any close friends or acquaintances who caribou hunt, then investing in a guided hunt is probably one of the best things you can do to make sure that you will enjoy caribou hunting for years to come.

Outfitters will set you up with a guide and take you to the prime hunting spots. They can’t guarantee that you’ll find a caribou or get a shot at one but the odds of this are maximized when you go on a guided hunt with a very experienced guide. They can also help you avoid some of the pitfalls of caribou hunting such as not understanding all the laws surrounding it and complying with them.

Some areas have strict limits on caribou hunting while others are more relaxed. But you’ll need to follow local gun laws and any requirements as far as how you dress the caribou in the field as well as the weapons you use to hunt the animals. The last thing you want to do is have a successful caribou hunt and end up with a hefty fine because you used improper ammunition or you improperly butchered the animal. An experienced guide can lead you through that maze of technicalities.

You’ll also get one-on-one instruction in how to find caribou tracks and figure out where they’re most likely to be found. Through droppings, tracks, and scrapes and rubbings on the sides of trees, guides can pretty much show you the paths that the caribou take each day. Depending on where you hunt, you may be limited to using either a rifle or a compound bow. Areas that allow both typically have a very distinct season for rifle hunters and a distinct season for those who use a bow.

A guide can tell you the best type of ammunition to use as well as the best weight and point weight of arrows, depending on what you choose. This is an important choice because it will determine how quickly and mercifully you kill the animal. A guide or mentor can also teach you how to properly field dress the animal after a successful day of caribou hunting.

Equipment for the Duck Hunt

The duck hunt is something that you must plan for and something that’s very hard to do spontaneously. That’s because there is a certain amount of equipment that you need to do a proper hunt. You can’t just wake up one day and decide you’re going to go duck hunting at night. Of course you need the proper duck hunting license and a permit for your gun. But even if you have those, you still need to do some preparation work before you go on the duck hunt.

Duck hunting gear seems to improve with each passing year. Take, for instance, the type of ammunition used. Duck hunters used to use lead shot. Today it’s common to simply use shotgun shells. While some purists still insist on using the old methods, shells will travel farther at a faster speed. So you can be farther away from the bird and still get the shot.

An important advantage of shell ammunition over lead shot is that there is no lead in the shells. Lead shot would actually leak a small amount of lead into the flesh. When you use shells, you don’t have to worry about eating lead when you enjoy your duck dinner.

When you’re planning for the duck hunt you also want to make sure you have proper camouflage. Unlike the type of camouflage hunters wore 20 or 30 years ago, today’s camouflage hunting outfits are lightweight and moisture absorbing. They’re also waterproof on the outside. This serves a few purposes. Being light weight means that if you need to wear thermal underwear beneath them you won’t feel like you’re wearing 10 layers of clothing. And if it’s warm out, you’ll stay cooler.

The fabrics absorb your sweat and pull it away from you so that you’re more comfortable while the waterproof outside keeps the rain out and keeps your sweat in. Camouflage gear like this is ideal for hunting deer and other mammals because it can help suppress your scent. This is less of a concern with duck hunting but you still want the waterproof camouflage gear to keep you comfortable.

You’ll need decoys for the duck hunt. You can get very expensive decoys that are practically photorealistic or you can get inexpensive decoys. As long as they resemble ducks and float, you should be fine.

Next comes the choice of the hunting boat or a duck blind. Duck boats are designed a little bit differently than other types of boats. They’re very flat and low to the water to give the hunter a low profile and draw less attention. Some people choose duck boats that have been painted in a camouflage manner and have all the amenities aboard like a box for gun storage, a cooler for sandwiches and beverages, and even special places to store duck decoys. Others are very basic and cost considerably less.

If you opted for a blind instead, you can find someone who already has a blind and is willing to rent or loan you time in it or you can simply get some wood and build your own.

Start Buck Hunting

Buck hunting is one of the most popular types of hunting in the United States. If you decide to go buck hunting, you’ll be joining thousands of other hunters who enjoy the challenge and excitement of tracking and hunting deer. You want to make sure you have the proper equipment and gear, especially if you go alone. It should be stressed however, that if you’re in doubt about your ability to successfully buck hunt on your own, you should not go by yourself. Take a friend who’s experienced or go on a guided hunt until you’re familiar with the basics. Being unsure of your situation and going buck hunting can put you at risk as well as other people in the area.

The first step is deciding whether you’re going to hunt with a gun or compound bow. There may be laws in your area that forbid one or the other. Most areas, however, have two seasons for buck hunting. There’s a season for gun hunters and a season for those who use a bow. So you can actually choose both if you prefer, just be sure you only hunt with the type of weapon that’s in season at the time.

You also want to make sure you have the right ammunition or the right arrows. Choosing the right arrows for buck hunting is an important consideration because you want the arrow to be heavy enough to travel well and be able to kill with one shot. You’ll also want to make sure you have the proper hunting knives. When you get a buck you have to field dress it, which means you remove the internal organs and lower the weight of the animal to allow you to drag it from the woods. You’ll want to carry at least one knife to use for this. You won’t need a skinning knife while you’re in the woods, but rather a thick and sturdy one to allow you to cut into the animal and dress it. Know your local laws regarding hunting because they may have specific procedures you must follow when doing this.

The proper clothing is necessary for buck hunting. Your clothing needs to be camouflaged so that the deer won’t pick you out among the brush and trees. You’ll also want to consider the weather and choose appropriate clothing. Waterproof boots to keep your feet warm are essential. If you’re going to hunt in a tree stand as opposed to on the ground, you want to have extra warmth available and be very aware of the weather so that you’re not caught out in a bad storm.

Of course, you’ll need the proper hunting license and any gun or bow permit that you need in your area. A product designed to cover your scent can help. And you want to use tree stand or some sort of chair, if you’re staying on the ground, but sturdy and comfortable. Also, consider taking a bit of food and water as well as a small first aid kit with you when you go buck hunting just in case of an unforeseen accident.

Duck Hunting Gear

duckhuntingThroughout the world there are different duck populations and different water bird populations, and just as these will vary, so will your luck as a duck hunter. Duck hunting gear is constantly improving, however, making it simpler and straighter forward for you to go hunting and come back successful. The improvements in duck hunting gear are easily encompassing all areas of duck hunting that are going to concern you, including but not limited to clothing, blinds, ammunition, methods for dog training, decoys and all other hunting gear that you may require.

Many hunters are of the believe that modern duck hunting ammunition and shells are far advanced in comparison to the lead shot that was used several years ago. There are many serious improvements that have been made, including for example higher velocity loads which are capable of providing greater distance for shooting as well as a non toxic shot, which means that consuming the bird will be more palatable in the end. With these improvements in equipment, hunters are capable of bagging their prey from even further away than before

Camouflage wear for hunting has also certainly improved the success of duck hunting. The garments that are worn today are extremely lightweight and also happen to be waterproof, and so they allow for great comfort and they also allow the hunter to remain dry for a longer period of time. Duck hunting jackets have been tailored to be wind proof, and this keeps the hunter warmer for longer, and they are also lightweight meaning that freedom of movement is capable of being provided.

Duck boats are also now much more advanced in nature. Today’s duck boats are much more specialized today than they were a few years ago. Duck boats are a necessary part of the duck hunting gear that is necessary for navigating streams, rivers, swamps, sloughs and lakes for prey. The manufacturers making these watercraft are responding to the importance of boats among hunters of water fowl like ducks.

Another improvement has been made in the way of duck blinds both on land and in boats as well as they have undergone a variety of design changes. Now they offer superior construction, greater designs and better materials as well. When it comes to having all of the right gear, these brand new duck blinds tend to be portable, easy to install, compact, light weight, affordable and also quite capable of hiding hunters. Boat blinds are made from rugged nylon and the frames are study, easy to set up, easy to attach and also just as easy to take down as well. The same is true for land blinds, which are just as easy to set up, and attach and take down, for easy hunting and great results.

There are plenty of new innovations in duck hunting that are making the sport more enjoyable and more successful than ever.

Pellet Gun Hunting Guide

Pellet GunAre you thinking about going out hunting with a pellet gun? There are a few important guidelines that you are going to need to follow if you want to make sure that you are being both humane and effective out there. Some of the things that you need to consider include choosing the proper gun, the proper scope and the proper ammo, and you must also make sure to use the correct practices when you go pellet gun hunting. The first consideration that you are going to want to make is what type of game you should be hunting and should not be hunting. Here is a quick guide to pellet gun hunting using an air gun.

First and foremost, you should understand that you should only be seeking out small game when you are going pellet gun hunting. Even the more powerful air guns are not capable of imparting enough destructive force that clean kills can be guaranteed when you are hunting larger prey. You should be sticking to creatures like field mice, rats and squirrels, and should never try to kill anything larger than an average sized raccoon when you go hunting using a pellet gun. Having the proper caliber of gun and ammunition is vitally important when it comes to hunting with a pellet gun.

In general, when it comes to hunting small game using a pellet gun the most preferable type of guns and ammo is a .22 caliber. A common misconception among hunters is that smaller calibers such as .20 and .177 produce a higher pellet velocity and as a result are better for hunting, but this is not necessarily true. The internal damage force is more important than the penetration force, meaning that you want ammo that is going to disperse more force after the impact than before, meaning that a heavier and thicker gauge like the .22 caliber is the right way to go when it comes to pellet gun hunting for small game. The smaller calibers are capable of risking passing through the animal without actually causing enough damage to kill it, which is inhumane.

If your game is going to be up in a tree or further out than 15 yards away, then using a scope is a smart idea for your pellet gun. Most pellet rifles come with scope mounts that you can fit a wide variety of different scopes onto. Once you know what the tendencies are for your particular gun, you can find a scope that will help you hit the game exactly where you intend for the pellet to strike.

Pellet gun hunting is capable of being really fun and enjoyable, and it is a great way for younger shooters to learn how to hunt successfully. As long as you are careful about the considerations mentioned above, you can find this method of hunting to be truly rewarding in many different ways.

Practicing Safety With a Gun While Hunting

huntingGun safety is absolutely critical when it comes to handling firearms and hunting. It is important that you learn how you can practice safety with your gun in order to prevent any injuries not only to you, but also to those that are around you as well.

It is vitally important that you practice gun safety while you are hunting. You should have protective gear, for example, even glasses or goggles and a pair of earplugs to make sure that you are protected.

The first step is to learn exactly how it is that your firearm operates. When you know how you should be correctly operating your weapon, then that is when you can truly prevent any injuries from occurring. When you become familiarized with the gun’s basic components, you will be safer when you are hunting. Learn basic gun safety and also you should be practicing how to load ammunition into the gun properly and safely.

Now you are going to want to keep your rifle, gun and any other weapons that you are using pointed away from yourself and any other person while you are hunting. There is no telling when a gun can go off – You don’t want to be pointing your gun at someone when it accidently misfires!

You should only ever make use of the right type of ammunition when you are hunting with your firearm. You should never simply experiment with different types of ammunition if they were not specifically designed to suit your firearm. If you use incorrect ammunition, you could end up misfiring and seriously hurting yourself or someone else.

You should absolutely never put your finger on the trigger of your gun unless you are actually ready to take a shot. You should make it a habit to rest your finger on the guard of the gun or the gun’s side rather than on the trigger for this very reason.

You are going to want to make sure that you know exactly what you are shooting at during any point in time. You should make sure that you are observing anything and everything around you. If there are people close by to your target, then no, it is not safe for you to shoot.

Make sure that you are wearing protection both for your eyes and your ears. You should always have a set of shooting goggles or a pair of glasses on hand when you are hunting so that debris does not enter into your eyes. You should wear earplugs when you are actually shooting so that your hearing does not sustain any damage.

Finally, you are going to want to avoid taking any medications or refrain from drinking any alcoholic beverages that can impair your judgment or cause drowsiness. These can cause problems with your judgment, which is the first step to experiencing or causing an injury while hunting.

Guide to Hunting Guns

huntergunBlack powder guns and guns with muzzle loaders are quite different in comparison to the hunting guns that we are making use out of today. Today’s guns make use of bullets as well as cartridges instead. The old school black powder guns are loaded up with a type of black powder that is comprised of powdered sulfur, carbon, potassium nitrate, water and denatured alcohol. These black powder hunting guns are typically used when you need to achieve an accurate shot over a long distance, and they are quite popular for hunting, even among modern day hunters despite better, more advanced technologies being made available.

History is going to tell you that this type of gun was invented by the Chinese as they were working on explosives experiments to create something that could be used during their ceremonies as well as rituals. There are a number of different factors capable of affecting the mechanisms behind these guns, including the choke, the ignition system, the shot charge, the propellant, and configuration and over powder ward.

There are a number of professional hunting shops that will be able to give you assistance in selecting the right hunting guns for your purposes. These shops are available not only in person in brick and mortar fashion, but also online as well. Seldom are you going to run across suppliers that stock both black powder and firearms as a result of federal law. Real black powder is classified as being an explosive according to the United States government, and so retailers as well as dealers are required to get a special permit before they are allowed to stock this special concoction.

Although your typical black powder gun is not a fixed ammunition firing gun, these guns are not restricted by any law by the federal government. However, it is important for you to know that some states do place restrictions on selling these guns directly, including but not limited to Hawaii, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan and New York. For this reason, it might be a good idea for you to find a dealer that can behave as a middleman for the transaction purpose.

Here is what you might want to consider doing when it comes to getting your hunting gun on the internet: First and foremost, you are going to want to fill out the necessary forms for the purchase of a firearm. You are going to want to find a firearms dealer or store that has a current FFL, which is the Federal Firearms License and is required by law for selling guns. Upon the receipt of your order confirmation on the internet, you should include the contact information for the dealer in the comment box or e-mail it directly to the gun shop owner.

Eight Tips for Deer Hunting Success

huntingdeerWhen it comes to hunting deer, it is vitally important for you to pay attention to the smallest details. Here are a few unique tips that many hunters miss when it comes to bagging their dream trophy out in the woods.

1 – Use a Painted Stand - Paint both the bottom and the top of the stand. Your platform should also be camouflaged on the underside as well.

2 – Use Binoculars - Make sure that you are investing in a good, solid pair of binoculars, and make sure that you are using them often. This is going to be especially important when you are dealing with low light situations such as at dusk and at dawn.

3 – Waterproof Your Gear – This is especially important when it comes to your rifle, which is the most important asset that you have when you are hunting. Your rifle needs to be protected, meaning that you should absolutely waterproof it. Keep some oil on hand so that you can wipe your rifle down when rain is expected. Motor oil is good enough to do the trick in most circumstances.

4 – Practice Often – if you want to be successful when you are out hunting then you should hit the range a few times before you go hunting in order to take practice shots before you go hunting. Make sure that you are using the right gun and the right ammunition in order to get the full effect of your practice.

5 – Tread the Trails - Look at the trails where you’ll be hunting, tying some black sewing thread at various trail intervals approximately 3 feet off the ground. Check back often to see if the strands are broken. This will tell you if any animals have been by, and if so, which direction they are moving in so that you can keep track of deer before your hunt.

6 – Watch Squirrels - Squirrels, just like deer, tend to prefer the trees that have a plentiful number of accords. If you find such a patch of trees, where there are a number of squirrels present, then the likelihood is in your favor that there are also deer nearby.

7 – Keep Muscles Loose - It is important that you keep your muscles loose since sitting in your stand for too long, especially when it is cold, can really stiffen your muscles up. Make sure that you are getting up often and that you are moving your legs and your arms for limber muscles and good circulation.

8 – Tint your Lenses – You should be wearing shooting glasses that have tinted lenses in yellow. Not only are they going to protect your eyes quite well, but they are also going to allow you to see with greater ease during lower light situations.
