Choosing the Right Binoculars

binocularsIf you are planning on going hunting and you want to be able to see your chosen target from far away, then one of the most useful tools that you can have on you is a good pair of binoculars. Any hunter that has spent a significant amount of time in a deer stand is going to tell you that having a good pair of binoculars can work wonders when it comes to improving your odds of success at hunting. Here are some things that you are going to want to consider when it comes to buying hunting binoculars and getting the most use out of them.

Price and Value of Binoculars

Some of the best types of values for hunters today are going to come in the mid-priced prism binoculars for hunters. These are binoculars that are going to do some of the best jobs when it comes to most hunting enthusiasts. Waterproofing is going to be a must have when it comes to your hunting binoculars, and many of the mid-priced prism binoculars are going to offer this feature to you.

Keep in mind: While you can certainly buy sharper binoculars in similarly priced binoculars, they are often fragile and bulky, and unfortunately many of them also lack the waterproofing that you need for a good pair of hunting binoculars.

Features

Binoculars that have top of the line features such as phase correction and heavy rubber armor or nitrogen purging and rugged assembly tend only to be available in the most high priced optics from Europe, but finally these types of binoculars are becoming available elsewhere as well. Make sure that you fully understand a specific feature before you spend a lot of money on it though, because some of these features are not worth what the manufacturers are asking for them.

Compact Binoculars

Many hunters are going to be well served when they purchase a pair of full sized or mid sized binoculars, so the small compact style binoculars are not going to be the best option for you to choose. There is nothing wrong with choosing such a small compact style binocular, but they only have 20 mm to 25 mm objective lenses and you may decide that you want to go with something better instead.

Some Porro style prism binoculars that are on the market are available with individual focus mechanisms for the eyepiece where each of the eyepieces is actually focused separately. Keep in mind that this style of binoculars is not actually as versatile in comparison to center focus styles of binoculars, but if you do most of your hunting viewing from a single distance then they should work just fine for you.

Shopping around and comparing different brands and styles is going to be the best way for you to figure out which binoculars are best going to suit your needs.

Understanding what Birdshot Is

birdshotBirdshot can be described as a type of metal shot that was designed to be packed into shotgun shells. Birdshot consists of a number of metal spheres that are milled so that they are all the same size, and so that they can be easily packed together into a shotgun shell. When that shotgun shell is fired, it splits open and the birdshot is designed to separate and fly out at whatever target the gun is shooting at. The classic form of birdshot is made out of lead metal, but there are other materials that are used to create birdshot including steel birdshot, tungsten birdshot and other similar materials since there are environmental concerns that have to do with lead.

This style of shooting is named primarily because it was designed to be used with hunting a number of different types of game birds. When you are dealing with a larger type of shot, what you have is buckshot in reference to the idea of shooting larger game such as deer and pigs. The shot is packed up into a cartridge that is backed with padding as well as gunpowder and then it is loaded up into a weapon and fired at whatever the intended target is.

There are a number of different sizes of birdshot and they are customized in order to deal with game in a variety of different sizes. The primary goal for the hunter is going to be to be able to fire from a distance that is reasonable while still achieving enough of a level of penetration with the shot that the animal is killed or at least stopped or slowed down. If shot that is much too large is used, it can cause a severe amount of damage to the animal which is going to make the game completely useless for the table or for the trophy room. Shot that is too small on the other hand is capable of inflicting injuries without being effective enough for the animal to actually be killed. In addition to this being completely inefficient for hunting, small shot is also capable of being inhumane because the animal may be allowed to suffer considerably without actually dying if it becomes injured by birdshot that is too small.

Although the purpose behind birdshot is to take down birds, it is certainly also going to be capable of injuring larger animals as well. Many hunting supply stores do carry birdshot as well as shotgun pellets that come pre-packed with birdshot that is already ready for you to use. As with any form of ammunition, it is vitally important for you to completely understand what the appropriate uses are for birdshot before you use is so that you are safe.

Must-Have Hunting Supplies

huntingSince prehistoric times, hunting has been a true game of survival between our species and the world of animals. Gradually as civilization has become more civilized, and through advancements in technology, we have fine tuned this art of hunting into a true skill that not everyone can possess.

Those who do possess the skill of hunting can hunt to relax or to find food. Having the right hunting supplies can really make or break your experience in the woods since it will determine whether or not you have the tools and resources that you need to make the kill. Let us start with the basics in terms of must have hunting supplies and go from there. Regardless of whether you are a novice hunter or a professional one, every hunter should absolutely have the following hunting supplies:

1 – You should have a back pack or day pack that will make it easier for you to store and to transport all of your hunting gear along the way.

2 – You need to have a rifle with a bare minimum number of 10 cartridges, or more if you need.

3 – A compass, as this extremely useful tool will help to allow you to get a good sense of where you are going at all times.

4 – Maps of the areas where the hunting is going to take place so that you know where you are in relation to where everything else is.

5 – A sturdy pair of binoculars, standard style without any bells and whistles is definitely going to come in handy.

6 – A cotton bag for storing your game in as you go through the hunting process,

7 – A large knife that you can use to cut and skin the game as you go, so that you only carry what you need and nothing more,

8 – A small knife such as a Swiss Army knife, which is a must have essential item,

9 – Strong nylon string to tie up and hang meat as you go for easier storage and safekeeping,

10 – A saw can be carried if you want to remove any ribs, horns, antlers or legs as you go, but this is not always necessary.

11 – Bring along garbage bags for anything you don’t want so that it can be stored properly in garbage bins rather than left out there in the wild.

A skilled hunter is also going to need to consider some other things. For example, you are going to need to consider permits and licenses when it comes to hunting since different seasons allow for different game hunting and some hunting is not allowed in certain places. If you plan on hunting for anything longer than a day, you should plan the proper camping gear to make sure that you have everything you need at your disposal. Make sure that all of your needs are addressed when planning your hunting trip.

Choosing Hunting Optics

huntingopticsSelecting hunting optics is going to be a really big priority if you are a hunter or a rifle shooter. Having good optics is going to give you a serious advantage when it comes to general accuracy as well as long distance shooting accuracy. Some of the optics that you are going to need to select will be scopes and binoculars as well as other optics equipment needed for hunting. Keep in mind that hunting optics equipment can be expensive, meaning that you need to make sure that you are buying the best products and that you are doing so at the best possible prices as well. Your favorite hunting and shooting magazines will play an important role in this process because they can provide a significant amount of assistance. In this day and age, it is common to buy optics online at sites like eBay and elsewhere where you can get a really good bargain for a nice piece of equipment.

When it comes to hunting optics, there are a number of big name brands including ATN, Bushnell, Leupold, Nikon, Swarovski and Zeiss. All of these brands are capable of providing the top quality in optics, and choosing any of them is not going to steer you wrong. The real key to success in choosing hunting optics is going to be to choose the right optics that will fit your rifle as well as your own personal needs and your personal shooting style as well.

What sort of hunting optics are you looking for? There are actually a number of different options for optics that you are going to want to consider, including but not limited to scope mounts and rifle scopes, vision scopes and spotting scopes, range finders, laser scopes, monoculars and binoculars just to name a few. Monoculars, for example, are capable of being used either on a tripod or singly in the way that binoculars can. They are only a single eye piece, however, rather than a dual eye piece in the way that binoculars are. They are especially ideal for hunting optics because they let you use a single eye to look through while the other eye is looking around normally. You can also buy monoculars with night vision capabilities built in.

Another popular hunting optic for you to consider is range fingers, which are more high tech in comparison to other types of hunting optics because they are literally capable of calculating the distance between you and your target with the use of a laser. You can also buy binoculars that are intended specifically for hunting use. If you hunt in weather that is unpredictable, then you may want to choose hunting optics that are water proof and weather proof in order to make sure that they last in the elements. Ultimately it is up to you to choose the right hunting optics that you need, so make sure that you choose the optics that will best suit you and your personal hunting and shooting style.

Choose Great Hunting Gifts

Whether you’re looking for hunting gifts for a hunting buddy or you’re someone who doesn’t hunt but you need a gift for someone who does, just keep in mind what the person loves and it’ll be hard to choose a gift that they don’t love. Gift giving for anyone is simplified if you keep in mind the things they love to do. Whether a man is a football fanatic or he likes model airplanes, a gift with some sort of relationship to those favorite things is going to be hit. So a man who hunts is going to love something related to the sport.

Outdoorsman hunting gifts can be anything they can use while hunting or anything that reminds them of hunting. While that might seem like a narrow field to choose from if you’re not a hunter, it’s really a wide-open area. Someone who hunts uses all types of gear. Hunting gifts could be any of those things that he regularly uses.

A duck hunter might enjoy duck calls or a new decoy. Someone who hunts deer or large animals like that might enjoy a new hunting knife or something specifically related to the animal that they hunt. If you can’t bring yourself to purchase a hunting knife for someone else, then consider things like a keychain that says deer or elk hunter. A bumper sticker or a decal for them to put on their vehicle that shows their love of hunting is also a good option.

Camouflaged items are popular hunting gifts. If you know the person’s size then camouflaged clothing is a good option as are things like camouflaged jackets. Many hunters also enjoy fishing or their hunting takes them out onto the water. So useful items like keychains that float and keep keys from sinking are a good idea. Most hunters can never have enough emergency flashlights so a flashlight it doesn’t require batteries like a hand crank flashlight is a thoughtful and practical gift.

If you already hunt and you’d like to buy hunting gifts for friends who also enjoy the sport, you can simply ask them what they need or go for something that’s a perennial favorite. Hunting DVDs and books that provide information and entertainment are sure to be appreciated.

Even if you are a duck hunter and your friend is a deer hunter, you can purchase them a book (Strategies for Whitetails) or DVD (Deer Masters Home Deer Processing) about white tailed deer hunting and that’s going to interest them. You don’t actually need to know anything about their type of hunting to give them a thoughtful gift about their sport. Also consider things like cookbooks for wild game (Dressing & Cooking Wild Game). Your deer hunting friend might appreciate a cookbook all about how to prepare venison, or your duck hunting friend might appreciate a cookbook that’s about different ways to cook ducks and geese.

Just think about the many things that hunting involves from preparation to safety to cooking, and you’ll come up with great hunting gifts for everyone on your list.

Buying Hunting Gear Online

huntinggearThanks to the internet, now you can successfully buy just about anything including the types of hunting gear and outdoor equipment that you could ever possibly need, and you never need to leave your home in order for you to make this happen. The internet has quickly come an outstanding place for you to find some of the best hunting gear prices available, though you may initially be hesitant to spend money on hunting gear over the internet if you have not actually seen the desired items in person. With only a couple of simple steps, however, you can make purchases for the most sought after hunting equipment online and you can be confident in the decision that you have made as well.

The first step that you should be taking in this process is to hop onto the internet and begin to do some research. Let us say for example that you are looking for a brand new set of binoculars. You go to a search engine of your choosing such as Google.com and punch in an appropriate keyword, such as “binocular reviews” for example. Find a website that is reputable for your reviews, or if you are not sure about the reputation for a specific review site then what you can do is go to numerous different review sites to sort of average out what everyone is saying about the products that you are attempting to buy. If you read multiple different reviews on the product of your choice, you will get the best possible idea about what you are looking for. Once you know what product you should go for, you can better narrow down your search until you have one that you are adequately satisfied with.

Buying the right hunting gear can mean spending a pretty penny, and if you are going to be spending a lot of money on the right gear, then it is vitally important that you do choose the right gear, especially when it comes to online shopping when making returns is a little more difficult. You should know exactly what you are getting if you shop online. If you can, visit a local store to test the product out, to get a feel for its quality, its weight and other characteristics, and then try to find it online to see if you can get a better deal on the product of your choosing.

This is because finding the best pricing for the product you are looking for is important. You should be searching on websites like Froogle in order to see what different people are asking for the products that you seek in order to make sure that you get the best possible price. The more you shop around, the better the results will be, so make sure to use due diligence in searching for the best products at the best prices and you will surely enjoy your next hunting outing.

Calling for Duck and Goose Hunting

If you’ve ever gone duck and goose hunting chances are you’ve heard people calling these animals. Many people sit in their blinds or in their duck boats and call repeatedly. Unfortunately, most of them are making sounds that the birds would not recognize as one of their own. That’s why it’s not uncommon to hear people calling and calling without ever hearing them take a shot at waterfowl. The ducks and geese simply know not to come in that area because someone’s making a strange sound that they don’t recognize.

When calling for duck and goose hunting it’s important to get the sound right if you want to attract the birds. Just having a duck call and blowing on it doesn’t mean that you’re going to do a good enough job to actually attract ducks or geese. Many hunters seem to treat these things like they are kazoos and below with all their might as if the sheer volume alone will attract the birds.

There’s actually a technique to proper calling for duck and goose hunting. The first thing you should do is actually listen to ducks and geese. You’ll never hear them call the way many hunters blow on those duck calls. Ducks and geese make very short and simple sounds unlike the trumpeting whale people seem to produce on their calls.

It’s important to practice and when practicing try to emulate the sounds that you hear the birds making. Thinking that perhaps you’ll call louder and longer than an actual bird to get their attention isn’t going to help you. You will get their attention and tell them that there’s not a duck or goose where you are. Listen to the short and choppy quacks and honks that these animals make and practice mimicking those.

Also, don’t be fooled into thinking you need an expensive duck call in order to be successful. You can purchase a cheap duck call. It’s not the call itself but what you do with it that will attract the birds or drive them away. If you’re new to calling and unsure of your ability, stick with duck calls. They are easier to mimic than goose calls because geese are more vocal and have a larger range of sounds.

If you do have trouble mimicking the sounds then a more expensive call might help you by limiting the sounds it’s capable of making. Look for short reed calls especially for goose calls. Acrylic calls over wooden ones may also be better because they also limit the depth of sound you can produce. They are also far easier to blow than the old wooden calls. This means you automatically know you don’t have to blow as hard as it prevent you from creating a mighty honk that will drive all the waterfowl in the area away.

If you’ll spend just a little time practicing calling for duck and goose hunting you’ll do a much better job of attracting the birds when you’re actually in the blind or the duck boat.

Buying a Gun Scope

When you’re buying a gun scope, choosing the biggest and most expensive isn’t always going to guarantee you a great product. It’s true that you get the quality that you’re willing to pay for so choosing the cheapest is probably not going to be the best option. But going right for the most expensive is overlooking some very important things like what’s right for you not just what’s right in general.

Think about where you typically hunt. Do you stay in when the weather is foul and it’s raining or stormy? Or do you go out no matter what? If you typically go out in all types of weather and your scope and gun can be exposed to rain, you want to very carefully read the scope’s specs. Some scopes are designed specifically to be water resistant while others aren’t. If you go out in the rain you want to make sure that you’re buying a gun scope with a water repellent lens. Otherwise, water can get into the scope and ruin it from the inside out making it useless very quickly.

Reading the fine print can help you see if the scope you’re looking at is water resistant. It’s a good idea to read the fine print even if you don’t particularly need a water repellent lens. Fine print will help you see certain things like guarantees and exceptions to the quality and performance of the scope that they may not point out in big letters. The fine print is typically where you’ll find the warranty also. Make sure the warranty lasts at least 30 to 60 days so you’re protected against a defective lens.

When you’re buying a gun scope you need to make sure that the lens you look through is clear enough to be comfortable for you. The bigger the scope lens in front, the lighter and clearer your view through it will be. If you hunt when it’s dark outside, you want that forward lens to be as big as possible and give you a lighter view. Any type of low light conditions can be improved with scope like that.

There is a trade-off for having a large forward lens, however. That means the lens will have to be mounted farther away from your eye and farther up on the gun. You might need to play around when you’re buying a gun scope to find where on the gun you’re most comfortable with the scope and settle for a lens of that size. The best scope in the world isn’t going to do you much good if it’s unnatural feeling to you because it’s so far away.

When you’re buying a gun scope you’ll also want to make sure that it has an anti-reflective coating on the lens. You don’t want an animal to see any type of reflection off of your lens and bolt away. Don’t forget that when you’re buying a gun scope, it’s a significant investment so take the time to get the exact scope you need.
